Reece Monument Co. presents Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series $10,000-to-win ‘Scorcher’ on Thursday, Aug. 25 at Volunteer Speedway
BULLS GAP, Tenn. — The Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series $10,000-to-win eighth annual Scorcher presented by Reece Monument Co. of Tazewell is scheduled Thursday, Aug. 25 at Volunteer Speedway.
Race fans from all 50 states and also from several foreign countries visit the East Tennessee region two times a year for NASCAR racing at nearby Bristol Motor Speedway. With Volunteer Speedway hosting big-purse special events in mid-week during August race-week at Bristol, many out-of-state fans in the region for the NASCAR action enjoy making the short drive down Interstate 81 to take in a night of exciting dirt racing on the high banks at “The Gap.â€
The racing program will feature Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series Red Buck Cigars Time Trials, Heat Races, B-Mains, and the 60-lap $10,000-to-win Eighth Annual Scorcher, plus the Fastrak Racing Series-sanctioned Pro (Crate) Late Models.
Previous Scorcher winners are: Randle Chupp (2004), Rick Eckert (2005), Scott Bloomquist (2006), Chris Madden (2007), Jimmy Owens and Shane Clanton (2008), Tim McCreadie (2009), with Jimmy Owens and Scott Bloomquist each winning on back-to-back nights in 2010.
Leading the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series competitors is defending series champion Scott Bloomquist of Mooresburg, Tenn., along with Jimmy Owens of Newport, Tenn.; Earl Pearson Jr. of Jacksonville, Fla. (2005, ’06, ’07 and ’08 Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series champion, driving for NASCAR Sprint Cup Series competitor Bobby Labonte); Don O’Neal of Martinsville, Ind.; Steve Francis of Ashland, Ky.; Jared Landers of Batesville, Ark.; Ray Cook of Brasstown, N.C.; John Blankenship of Williamson, W.Va.; Brad Neat of Dunnville, Ky.; Bub McCool of Vicksburg, Miss.; Tyler Red(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) of Corning, Calif.; Dale McDowell of Chickamauga, Ga. Also expect to see in action the always tough East Tennessee locals such as five-time (1997, ’98, 2000, ’05 and ’09) Volunteer Speedway track champion Vic Hill of Morristown, Greeneville’s Jeff Maupin (2008 and ’10 champion), Kerry Jones of Bristol (2001 and ’07 champion), Mark Douglas of Knoxville (2002 and ’03 champion), Powell’s Mark Vineyard, Maryville’s Tommy Kerr, Billy Ogle Jr. of Knoxville, Sevierville’s Chad Ogle, Brett Miller of Greeneville, Knoxville’s Ross White, Mike Weeks of Friendsville, and Knoxville’s Bryan Hendrix.
Both the grandstand and pit gates will open on Thursday, Aug. 25 at 4 p.m. Hotlaps are tentatively scheduled to begin at 8 p.m. (once sun begins to set over the track), to be followed by time trials and then racing action getting green flag around 9 p.m.
Adult grandstand admission is $25, youth (ages 10-15) $10, with kids 9-and-under admitted free in the grandstands. There will be no reserved seating for the Scorcher, all seating general admission (but there’s not a bad seat in the house)!!! Pit passes and backside tier-parking $35, regardless of age.

***NOTE: With a large crowd expected and all available seating space needed for the Lucas Oil Late Model Dirt Series eighth annual Scorcher, no lawn chairs will be permitted in the grandstand. Only stadium seat-type cushions will be allowed. Also, no coolers or outside food allowed to be brought into the front straightaway (main) grandstand!!! Coolers are permitted in the pit area and the reserved backstretch tier-parking, however no glass containers allowed.
Camping is available on the track property, however, with no hookups. For those camping, once you enter through the main gates, drive over to your right and set-up in the designated area.
Directions to Volunteer Speedway: South on Interstate 81 from Tennessee/Virginia state lines, take Exit 23 (Bulls Gap/Greeneville), then turn right onto Hwy. 11-E at bottom of the exit ramp. Look for track entrance approximately 200 yards on left.
North on Interstate 81 from I-81/I-40 split (East of Knoxville, TN), take Exit 23, then turn left onto Hwy. 11-E at bottom of the exit ramp. Continue underneath the interstate over-pass and track entrance approximately 300 yards ahead on left.
