Georgia Track’s Second Annual ‘Winter Freeze’ Event Becomes A $20,000-To-Win Spectacular

SYLVANIA, GA – April 1, 2011 – The 2012 World of Outlaws Late Model Series season will kick off in unprecedented fashion.

Screven Motor Speedway’s second annual ‘Winter Freeze’ event will become a multi-day, $20,000-to-win WoO LMS extravaganza on Feb. 9-11, 2012, track and series officials announced on Friday.

The 60-lap headline A-Main will be the richest season-opening race in the history of the WoO LMS as well as the biggest show ever presented at promoter Redd Griffin’s 15-year-old Georgia track located about an hour’s drive Northwest of Savannah.

It will also mark just the second time since the national tour was restarted in 2004 under the World Racing Group banner that the schedule will begin at a facility other than Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla.

“We’re extremely excited to work with Redd Griffin and his staff on an event that promises to bring plenty of attention to the World of Outlaws Late Model Series and Screven Motor Speedway,” said WoO LMS director Tim Christman. “Redd approached me with his desire for Screven to host our 2012 season opener and we immediately started to discuss some options.

We’re thrilled that he decided to expand his ‘Winter Freeze’ into the biggest dirt Late Model race that Georgia/Florida Speedweeks has seen in years.”

Griffin, who has scheduled an annual WoO LMS event at his three-eighths-mile oval since 2008, attempted to hold his first ‘Winter Freeze’ program earlier this year, on Feb. 3.

The inaugural event – a doubleheader featuring dirt Late Models and the O’Reilly All-Star Circuit of Champions Sprint Car Series – was postponed by rain to Nov. 2 after all Sprint Car qualifying and a portion of the dirt Late Model preliminaries were completed.

After Screven’s ’11 WoO LMS card was washed out by thunderstorms on March 26, however, Griffin moved to make the dirt Late Model portion of the postponed ‘Winter Freeze’ – which was already slated to restart from scratch on Nov. 2 – a WoO LMS event and pumped up the winner’s share to $12,000. Griffin also agreed to list the Wed., Nov. 2, date as tentative; he will reset the ‘Winter Freeze’ to Tues., Nov. 1, if wet weather would force the World of Outlaws Showdown on Oct. 12 at The Dirt Track at Charlotte to be postponed to Nov. 2 as a lead-in to the World Finals as happened in 2008 and 2009.

Now, just three months after the WoO LMS visits Screven for a critical late-season event, Griffin will bring the tour back for a blockbuster lidlifter. He acted to announce the 2012 event as early as possible in order to get it cemented on the calendars of both fans and racers.

“We’re really looking forward to next year’s ‘Winter Freeze’ with the World of Outlaws Late Model Series,” said Griffin. “I feel real good about it. We want to build our February show and getting together with the World of Outlaws is the way to do it.
“We like working with the World of Outlaws. We’ve had great success with Outlaw races at Screven – that name just draws people.”

Griffin has become known for the annual improvements he makes to his facility and he expects more will be done prior to the 2012 ‘Winter Freeze.’ He said erecting additional grandstands will be high on his list of priorities.

“We’re going to do everything we can to make next year’s ‘Winter Freeze’ a fun weekend for everybody who comes to Screven,” said Griffin, a personable, easily-approachable track owner who is often seen interacting with race teams and fans. “I already can’t wait for February to get here.”

The format for the WoO LMS portion of the 2012 ‘Winter Freeze’ calls for an open practice on Thurs., Feb. 9; time trials and heat races on Fri., Feb. 10; and B-Mains and the 60-lap, big-money A-Main on Sat., Feb. 11.

Local divisions will also compete, and Griffin is planning to include a 410 Sprint Car program on either Thursday or Friday night, pending talks with O’Reilly All-Star officials.

More details of the 2012 ‘Winter Freeze’ at Screven Motor Speedway will be released in the coming months. Log on to www.screvenmotorspeedway.com for information.

Volusia Speedway Park, which since 2004 has hosted the WoO LMS season opener every year with the exception of ’06, will follow Screven on the 2012 schedule.

Tour events on Feb. 23 and 25, 2012, will be part of the 41st annual DIRTcar Nationals that runs from Feb. 14-25.

UNOH All Star Circuit of Champions open 2012 season "Down South"

    CAMARGO, IL (11-19-11)

    By Brian Liskai–

The UNOH All Star Circuit of Champion Sprint Car Series will open their 2012 season with 'good ol’
“Southern Hospitality” in February when they visit GEORGIA 1st & then Florida.

The UNOH All Stars will kick things off when they visit Screven Motor
Speedway in Sylvania, Georgia, on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 10 and 11.

The series then heads to Volusia Speedway Park in Barberville, Fla., Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 15 and 16, and end up at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Fla. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Feb. 23-25.

The seven races in the South will pay a combined $35,000 to win and will be part of the All Star’s Eastern Region points battle in addition to points being handed out for the National title.

Pennsylvania Posse member Lance Dewease claimed the series’ first Eastern Region championship in 2011.

He will have his hands full with the likes of three-time and defending All Star champion Tim Shaffer, who also won the Ohio and Great Plains region titles in 2011, and three time series champion Dale Blaney.

Throw in the young guns like Danny Holtgraver, Pete Miller, Cap Henry, David Gravel and more and the possibility of several World ofOutlaw teams competing during these events and you have a recipe forexciting winter racing.

“We’re very excited about the 2012 southern races.

There’s plenty of racing for the folks from up north to see this year in Georgia and Florida. We are working with these stable tracks and promoters and look forward to our tented drivers putting on a tremendous show,” said Guy Webb of All StarChampionship Racing.

SCREVEN`S scond Annual Winter Freeze will take place Feb. 9-11 with the UNOH All Stars in competition with a pair of $5,000-to-win events on Feb.
    10 and 11.

Screven will also be open Feb. 6-8 for testing sessions. Screven owner,
Redd Griffin, will prepare the track daily and make it available for $50
per team to have additional testing sessions prior to the Winter Freeze
    event.

Thursday, Feb. 9 will feature a full regular practice session as
well in preparation for Friday and Saturday's Winter Freeze event.

Fans attending the Winter Freeze will have access to all venues at the
track including pit access to all tracks for one small price.

In addition, fans will get the chance to compete in the second annual go-kart challenge
with some of the drivers on hand for the event.

Plus, the track will host autograph sessions, meet and greets and more for fans in attendance.

Once again the UNOH All Stars will be a part of the 41st Annual DIRTcar
Nationals presented by UNOH. “America’s Series” will kick off the tradition
on Wednesday and Thursday, Feb. 15 and 16, with each night paying $5,000 to
    win.

The UNOH All Stars will wrap up their “Southern Swing” with three big
nights of racing at Bubba Raceway Park in Ocala, Feb. 23-25. The features
the first two nights of action will pay $4,000 to win with the finale on
    Feb. 25 paying $7,000.

Screvenpr, I attended this weekends events and really enjoyed being there. Redd has a first class place and a lot of stuff going on. I would like to put in my 2 cents worth though. I forsee a problem with letting all the personal vehicles park in the pits. The racers do not need to be dodging personal vehicles. The corner by the Kart track was very cramped. I'm just a fan and not a racer, so maybe it's no big thing. If they plan on running all of these venues for the winter freeze I am sure there will be a parking problem because that place will be packed. I love that you can go anywhere on the grounds. My last thing, PEOPLE LEAVE THE 4-WHEELERS AT HOME & WALK, you need the exercise. Now that I got that off my chest, come on February.

I am a racer there and it's bad. It is by far one of the best tracks I have been to. The fact you can go and watch whatever you want, for 1 price. It's a great idea and it's something not every track can do. I really love racing there. But the parking and the 4 wheelers/golf carts are getting out of control. I park just off turn 2 at the T intersection and it's like Times Square there. I can't believe we went a whole season without someone getting hit. The NLMS race I witnessed a Lexus SUV get wiped out by a hauler. I was waiting to go out on the track and everything was blocked by trucks parked in the way, and the Hedmen trailer parked in the middle. A big stacker was trying to squeeze through and went right down the driver's side and tore the mirror off.

It's a great place but the changes I would make would be.
              1. Only haulers park inside unless they have a handicap sticker.
              2. All 4 wheelers, golf carts, skooters, bicycles or skate boards with a motor must have a working headlight, and it needs to be on. I don't care if its flashlights taped on. They need to be more visible.
              3. Anyone operating any of the above vehicles needs to have a valid drivers license, and be subject to a breathalyzer.

Again it is a great place to race, and to come and watch. And one of the reasons is the spectators are allowed in the pits. It's just more fun to walk around and be a "part" of it, than just sitting in the bleachers. But one accident will bring it all to a screeching halt.
Crew Chief "Tip of the day":
Most handling problems can be solved by adjusting the screw-ball. It can be difficult to fine tune at times. Explaining yourself loudly and striking it on top of the helmet with a dead blow hammer usually works well.

Wouldn't really complain about pricing. Look at the payout and races then think about it. Sprint cars like the ones that are coming never hardly see this area and this HAS to be the 1st $20,000 to win super late model race in South GA ever (Swainsboro is a crate race). Plus, its like to Redd's old saying from a few years back of pay 1 fee and roam around like a hog.

I dont really have a problem with 35 for Sat. night. 35 for Fri. night just seems alittle to much for me, but thats just my opinion. I hope everyone has a good time where ever they decide to take in a race this Feb.
