    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Smith, Henney, Norris, Garlock & Lauffer Winners at Hesston Ice Buster!

(Hesston, PA) Hesston Speedway opened its 2012 racing season on Saturday night with a great crowd in attendance. Tim Smith, Jr started off the season where he left off in 2011 at Hesston by claiming the Walter’s Auto Wrecking Late Model Sportsman feature. 2011 Champion Bill Henney won the Dan’s Auto Body B-Cadet feature. Mike Norris won an exciting Bubba’s Pizza and Sub Station Hobby feature. Ronnie Garlock took the checker in the Mod-4 with Mike Lauffer winning the Roadrunner feature.

Smith and Dave Leidy lead the Late Model Sportsman field to the green with Smith jumping out to the lead. Leidy fell into 2nd, but Rick Singleton immediately charged from his 5th place starting position into 3rd to challenge Leidy. 4 cautions slowed the race in the first 3 laps, but the remainder of the race ran under the green flag.

Smith kept control running on the high line but the race for 2nd found Leidy and Singleton running side by side for practically the entire race. Smith crossed the line in first to win $800. Leidy brought his car to the finish in 2nd despite being involved in a major incident in his heat race that found his car sitting on top of Matt Parks car. Singleton finisher 3rd followed by 8th starting Brian Lessley and Ralph Morgan Jr. Eric Irvin, 18th starting Robbie Black, Dave Dunkle, Cory Houck and Curtis Heath rounded out the top 10. Heat races for the strong 26-car field were won by Singleton, Lessley and Houck. Eric Irvin won the 2-lap “King of Motor Mountain” match race.

The B-Cadet class received a new look for 2012 with updated body styles, but when the checker flag was waved a familiar winner was in victory lane. 2011 champion Bill Henney turned in a strong performance to claim the $400 first prize. Dave Brown made a strong move on a double file restart late in the race to advance to 2nd with Boyd Brode finisher 3rd. Rich Swope and Ken Singer rounded out the top 5. Henney also won the heat race.

The Hobby feature saw several lead changes and a photo-finish, but when the checker flag flew Terry Norris came out the winner. Ryan Sager lead the initial laps. Carl Snare took control when he and Sager split a slower lapped car. Snare kept control over the race through several double file restarts, but broke with just a few laps remaining allowing Norris to take the lead with Chad Gambol in hot pursuit. Coming off the final turn, Gambol made a strong move and it was a drag race to the finish with Norris winning by just a foot. Gambol finished 2nd with Sagar, Andy Los and Derek Graybill rounding out the top 5. Los and Gambol won the heat races.

Ronnie Garlock was the winner of the Mod-4 feature when the time limit expired. Sonny Williamson challenged Garlock for the lead in the final laps, but was involved in a 4-car incident on the final turn of the race. Frankie Gordon went to the rear of the field after being involved in a 1st lap caution, but charged back to finish 2nd. Denny Cramer, Chris Anderson and Jeremy Ott rounded out the top 5. Heat wins went to Ott and Gordon.

Mike Lauffer put it on cruise control to take the win in the 12-lap, caution-free Roadrunner feature. Andrew Benson finished 2nd with Dave Lambert in 3rd. Ryan Claycomb and Garrett Watkins followed in 4th and 5th. Heat wins went to Lauffer and Lambert.

The next event at Motor Mountain is the Speedmonster vs. 3 State Flyers “Superthunder Road by the Lake.” The S³/3SF Super Late Models will make their 1st appearance of the year, racing for $5,100 to win in a 51-lap feature. The Semi-Late Model Sportsman will race 30 laps for $1,000 in this double division late model program. A-Cadets will run for $575, Hobby Modifieds for $300 and Roadrunners for $200. Speedmonster open-type rules will apply for the Semi-Late Model Sportsman, A-Cadets and Hobby-Modifieds.
