CARTERSVILLE, GA – When it comes to claiming the 2012 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series $20,000 Championship and the NeSmith Cup that will be presented at the series’ Annual Awards Banquet at the Georgia Racing Hall of Fame and Thunder Road Museum in Dawsonville, GA, the road to Dawsonville, GA leads straight through Greenville, MS.
There are six races remaining on the 2012 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division schedule, and three of those events will be held at Greenville Speedway in Greenville, MS. The top two drivers in the Championship hunt, Matthew Turner of Dawsonville, GA and David Earl Gentry of Murfreesboro, TN are more than O.K. with that route.
Both Turner and Gentry have NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division wins at Greenville Speedway. Two of the three series career wins for Turner have come on the ¼-mile black gumbo clay oval, and Gentry used a Greenville Speedway win last year to revive his title hopes, after being way behind.
Greenville Speedway will host the next two NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division events this Friday night and Saturday night with the 3rd Annual Delta Dirt Nationals. Round 17 will be a 40-lap $2,000-to-win race on Friday night, and Round 18 will be a 50-lap $2,500-to-win race on Saturday night.
Turner holds a 54-point lead at the top of the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series points chase. This is as close as Turner has come to winning his first NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Championship after seven years of trying. In past years, Turner was the National Championship Runner-Up in 2010, and has finished third on three different occasions (2005, 2009, and 2011.
Known as “The Ironman†of the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series, Turner has not missed a single Touring Division race since the inception of the series in 2005. This Friday night, Turner will be competing in his 141st consecutive series event.
So far this season, Turner has 1,374 points with one win, seven top five finishes, 13 top ten finishes, one fast time award, and he has led 30 laps of competition in 16 races. Turner is also second in the Hedman Husler Hedders Husler of the Year point standings.
While Turner has yet to sit at the Champion’s table at the awards banquet, it is familiar territory for Gentry, who has taken the honored seat on two different occasions as the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Champion in 2006 and 2007. Gentry battled for his third title last season right down to the final race of the season, but came up 64 points in the end.
So far this season, Gentry has 1,320 points with two wins, seven top fives, 13 top tens, 2 fast time awards, and he has led 95 laps of competition in 16 races. In the “here we go again†category, Gentry finds himself coming into the Delta Dirt Nationals at Greenville Speedway behind the point leader a little more than he would like.
Last year, Gentry trailed the point leader by 28 points coming into the two-race Delta Dirt Nationals at Greenville Speedway. Gentry finished sixth in the Friday night race, and after winning the Saturday night race found himself tied for the point lead. Both Turner and Gentry know how quick fate can turn the points in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series.
Prior to the last four races of the 2012 NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division season held on July 4 through July 7, Gentry had a 29-point lead over Turner. After the four-race Salute To America Speedweek, Turner comes to Greenville Speedway with a 54-point lead. That’s a four-race gain for Turner of 83 points!
In addition to Turner and Gentry, several other drivers also have Greenville Speedway locked in their GPS devices as a route to reach their final destination of Dawsonville, GA. The Top 10 drivers in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division point standings will be honored and presented with point fund checks at the Annual Awards Banquet.
Chris Cantrell of Chester, SC is third in the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series points chase and also leads the VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year point standings. VP Racing Fuels will award the top rookie driver in the point standings at the end of the season with a $5,000 check. Cantrell has 1,276 points with five top fives, ten top tens, and two fast time awards in 16 races.
The 2011 VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year Chase Edge of Lafayette, AL is fourth in the standings with 1,264 points with one win, six top fives, eight top tens, and one fast time award in 16 starts. The 2010 VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year Larry Harrod of Plains, GA is fifth with 1,262 points after two wins, six top fives, 11 top tens, and two fast time awards in 16 starts.
Johnny Stokes of Columbus, MS is sixth with 1,104 points after 16 races with three top fives and seven top tens. Stokes is the 2010 NeSmith Chevrolet Weekly Racing Series West Region Champion and the defending champion of the Friday night Delta Dirt Nationals race at Greenville Speedway.
Michael Blount of Sumrall, MS is seventh with 976 points, and Anthony White of Clinton, TN is eighth with 794 points. William Thomas of Phenix City, AL holds down the ninth spot with 794 points, and VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year candidate Jake Teague of Oliver Springs, TN rounds out the top ten of the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Touring Division standings with 720 points.
There are also several drivers just outside the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series Top 10 points fund-paying positions that will be looking for good finishes this weekend at Greenville Speedway to race their way to the end of the season cash.
VP Racing Fuels Rookie of the Year candidates Cody Kierre of Beebe, AR and Justin Summers of Greenback, TN are 11th and 12th respectively in the point standings. Kierre has 632 points and Summers has 594 points. Frank Wilson of Harold, FL is 13th with 524 points and Ronnie Cooper of McKenzie, TN is 14th with 514 points.

Race Fans will also have an opportunity to get into the action on Saturday night with the NeSmith Chevrolet Dirt Late Model Series “Ride For Life†two-seat dirt late model race car to benefit the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.
Race fans will be able to bid at an Intermission Auction and through a drawing from ticket sales for a six-lap ride at race speed with one of six drivers. Race fans can also purchase chances to win one of three Race Fans Packs, a cooler full of special prizes valued at over $1,000. Fans can purchase chances to win the Fan Pack for $5 per ticket.
All of the proceeds from the “Ride For Life†auction, “Ride For Life†ticket sales, and the Race Fan Pack ticket sales benefit the local chapter of the American Cancer Society.
