4th annual Pelican 100 will be March 14th & 15th in 2014 in Vivian, Louisiana

Happening THIS WEEKEND with practice Thursday!

The first three years, this event at Ark-La-Tex Speedway has paid $10,000-to-win and has provided 3 outstanding 100-lap Dirt Late Model features. If you've never seen one there or raced one there, you have to give it a try! There's videos out there that you can check out on YouTube or just talk to anyone who went to any of the first three Pelican 100s and they'll tell you what a great race it is!

This event will also be good for Lucas Oil Late Model racers as that series will visit Ark-La-Tex Speedway for the first time ever, three weeks after the Pelican 100 on April 5th, 2014.

Less than 6 weeks to go until the 4th edition of the Pelican 100! The first 3 were three of the best Late Model shows that one can watch. Don't take my word for it -- ask anyone who saw any of the three!

No changes to the car & tire rules over last year's race. 8 inch spoilers for everybody.

We don't do pre-entries. In fact, there is NO entry fee. There's no series involved here so really, it's hard to tell you who's coming for sure until we open the gates for practice on Thursday night, March 13th and then see who shows up on Friday the 14th for time trials and heat races. Some racers may post it on their websites and we get word of mouth sometimes about who's coming and then it gets spread around via the internet but that's about it until we open the gates and turn on the green light.

All we really know is we've had an average of 41 cars show up the first 3 years and provide us THREE OUTSTANDING 100-lap Pelican A-mains that anyone who was at any of the three can vouch for! In fact, if you throw out the middle year when a rainout-caused reschedule was responsible for a lower count that year, our average sits at 48 Late Models for other two shows. One other note: whether it's been a COMP Cams race, a SUPR race or an unsanctioned event, there has NEVER been a bad Late Model race at Ark-La-Tex Speedway! (Knock on wood! :roll: )

21 days to go... Billy Moyer Sr. & Jr.

Can you name me a track that has held at least 3 100-lap, $10,000 to win Dirt Late Model events where Billy Moyer, Jr has more laps and experience than Billy Moyer, Sr. has?

Billy Moyer Jr. has raced at all 3 Pelican 100s with an average finish of 13th but that doesn't really tell the whole story. 'Kid Smooth' had an 8th in the inaugural Pelican 100 in 2011 and an 11th in last year's race. 2012 really was when the younger Moyer was at his fastest at Ark-La-Tex Speedway so far. In the May COMP Cams series race there that year, he went from 12th starting spot to finish 2nd in a caution-free 35-lap feature. Earlier that year, he qualified 6th for the Pelican 100 and was in contention to win when an incident took him out of the race about 1/3 of the way through and left him 20th.

As one would expect, Moyer, Sr had a solid first Pelican 100 appearance last year, finishing 2nd to Bub McCool and pulled along side Bub several times in the late stages before settling on the $5000 runner-up.

The last time the two Moyers were at ALT though, was last May's COMP Cams race that drew an incredible 44 entries for $2000-to-win. The shorter one-night, more compact program left Moyer Sr. starting way in the back but at the end, it was Moyer, Jr. finishing 5th and Sr., 6th.


20 days to go... Kevin Sitton

Kevin Sitton of Baytown, Texas will be heading to the Pelican 100 in less than 3 weeks. Kevin says his car was a 'little off' at last year's Pelican but he only missed the 100-lap A-main by just one spot. He needed a 5th in his B but ended up 6th. Sitton likes his chances this year in the #20 Barry Wright Chassis!

Sitton also ran 7th in the 2012 COMP Cams SDS race here with 36 cars on hand. Rolling Eyes He didn't make it to the 2013 version.

And then back when Kevin was first starting out in Late Models after running Limited Mods & Mods around the Houston area, he competed in the last SUPR race held here which was 2008 and finished 6th in a 26-car field.

Sleeper pick for a top 10? Wouldn't surprise me...


18 days to go... Ross Camponovo

9 years ago, in Feb of 2005, a young Clarksdale, Mississippi Modified racer by the name of Ross Camponovo was part of a 100+ field of cars at Ark-La-Tex Speedway's Modified Madness event. It took eight years, but 'The Boss' finally made his way back west to ALT and brought his Victory Circle Late Model #18 to the Pelican 100 in 2013. Ross finished 4th in his heat and then 2nd in his B-main to put her in the show!

It only took two months for Camponovo's 3rd trip to Ark-La-Tex Speedway though, this time it was a COMP Cams Super Dirt Series Late Model event. After battling hard for the lead with Arkansas's Tommy Surrett, Ross & Tommy got snookered by veteran Wendell Wallace who made a three-wide pass around both of them and drove away for the win. Camponovo did finish 2nd in that A-main though with a 44-car field on hand! How will Ross do 18 days from now at his second Pelican 100???


17 days to go... Robert Baker


Robert Baker's first race at Ark-La-Tex Speedway goes back as far as 5 years ago at least to his Modified days. The Little Rock racer ran 7th in the 2009 Spring Nationals (the race we ran before we had a Pelican 100) with a solid field of cars on hand. He also entered the 2010 & 2011 Doug Murphrey Memorials and finished 14th in 11. 14th no big deal? Uh... There were 110 cars entered here that year so he beat 90+ just to get that! Wasn't always rosy in the Mod though. Baker has also had one of the more memorable crashes at ALT too along our frontstretch wall with he and Wes Armstrong both going upside down and drivers coming out of destroyed cars ok. Rare occurrence at ALT actually. With a wall along the racing surface on the frontstretch only and a nice, wide and predominantly smooth racing surface usually, cars have a higher-than-average survival rate at our place. Motors too. The 1/4 mile layout and slick surface adds life to motors and doesn't require as much hp as it does handling and driver to win.

Robert's first run here in a Late Model was the 2012 COMP Cams SDS race where he posted a 12th in the A with a 36-car field on hand. He also finished 18th in the same event in 2013 with 44 cars there. Baker was in the pits all weekend long at last year's Pelican and he had his #17M Late Model with him. Unfortunately, he never got it on the track as the lift gate on the hauler malfunctioned and he became an unusual scratch as a result. Here's hoping that his Hoosier 1300s, 1350s, 1600s or shoulder plated 55s get to touch dirt at this year's Pelican 100!
