BOYD SPEEDWAY SHAMROCK 50 RESULTS
(Chattanooga, Ringgold, Ga -03-22-2014) As the largest crowd to witness a dirt race at the historic Boyd Speedway in recent history filed into the 1/3 mile clay oval facility you could fill the excitement in the air. Boyd Speedway was thrilled at the opportunity to host the annual Southern All Stars Shamrock 50 which had become a traditional event at Cleveland Speedway. With trucks and trailers parked in every corner of the pits New Owners David Duplissey and Dale McDowell along with Gar (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)son had worked hard to prepare a racing surface that would allow some of the best racing ever seen by local fans. With 45 Super Late Models representing over 10 states ready to be crowned the King, we needed to run a few qualifying heats in the weekly local divisions first. Before racing would get underway we took time to honor America with the singing of our National Anthem by a Special Guest Tito Cruz. First out would be the A-Hobby Division to run the first of their two Heats. In Heat #1 Justin Winters showed the way as he finished in front of Beau Bice #44 and last week’s winner #5 Josh Beagan. In the 2nd Heat a familiar name found at the top of the finishing order as Booger Brooks #148 crossed the finish line first in front of Brandon Stanfield and Cleveland’s Bobby Doss (after purchasing the car earlier in the day). Next out would see the Crate Late Models roll into position for the first of two heats. In Heat #1 Soddy Daisy’s Kenny Kizzar would take the lead on the last lap over Griffin Kinsey. A lap 6 caution would see #29 Jason Welshan spin in turn 1 bringing out the only caution of the race. Kizzar would finish in front of Bryan Pritchard and Ringgold’s Mike Tinker. In the 2nd Heat David Duplissey #D2 looked to have the field covered early until lap 4 when Andy Picklesimer made his move around Duplissey for the lead. A lap 6 caution when Duplissey and Kate Dallenback got together on the front stretch causing heavy damage to Dallenback’s #5 ending any chance she had to race this evening. Soddy Daisy’s Jerry Coffman would eventually take the lead and cruise to the victory in front of Picklesimer and Danny Turner. It was now time for Super Late Model Qualifying as four groups of racers were being lined up for two laps around the 1/3 mile clay oval and the top two racers from each group would be locked into the nights feature event. In Group #1 Chattanooga’s Riley Hickman would set fast time with a 14.272 followed by Ringgold’s Jamie Perry’s 14.433. In Group #2 Tiger Georgia’s Ethan Hunter would clock a 14.547 in front of Munford Alabama’s Brett Holmes’ 14.602. In Group #3 qualifying Maryville’s Jason Welshan would cross the line with a 14.442 in front of Oxford Alabama’s Jason Hiett’s 14.616. In the last Group Todd Morrow would turn a fast lap of 14.301 in front of Jeff Smith’s 14.422. This had locked into place our top 8 qualifiers and the remaining positions would be filled out of two last chance B-Mains. While the remaining drivers were sent back to their respected pits to make any last minute changes on their machines to better prepare for the last chance B-Mains a couple of Heats in the FWD/PONY Division were run. Bruce Kimber would take the first heat victory and Grady Stokes would take the second. It was time to bring the Southern All Stars back to complete the 24 car field; in B-Main #1 sixteen cars were trying to be one of the top seven to cross the finish line to secure the position in the nights 50 lapper. Fulton Mississippi’s Eric Cooley would cross the line first in front of Chris Wilson and Bo Shirley. In B-Main #2 Georgetown’s Skip Arp would pull away for an easy victory of Rick Hixson and Austin Kirkpatrick.
It was now time Feature time with the A-Hobby Division rolled into place on the front stretch, Justin Winters and Booger Brooks would lead them to the green flag and it didn’t take Brooks long to capture the lead on lap #1. A lap 10 caution for Michael Anderson’s #50A on the front stretch with heavy front end damage would slow the field under caution. A couple more cautions would slow the field, but nothing seemed to slow Brooks as he held off a fierce battle for the lead by Division Defending Champion Beau Bice to the checkered flag. Brooks would capture his first victory of the year in front of Bice, Winters, Beagan and Stanfield.
In the Crate Late Model Division a pair of Soddy Daisy residents found themselves on the front leading the field to the green. With Kizzar on the pole and Jerry Coffman along the side, Coffman would take the lead on lap 1 and never look back. Coffman by the end had worked his way through traffic lapping half the field that saw it go green for the entire 20 laps. Rounding out the top five were Mike Tinker, Kenny Kizzar, Bryan Pritchard and Danny Turner (?).
Before we brought the FWD/PONY Division out for their 15 lap feature another New Tradition was unveiled. As Track Owner Dale McDowell took a lucky winner Richard Stanley on the ride of his life around the 1/3 mile clay oval in Dale’s 2-seater racing machine. Both David Duplissey and Dale McDowell are going to continue to offer these special once in a life time experience at weekly shows. A post riding experience interview with Richard, he stated there wasn’t words that could express the thrill of riding around the track with his favorite driver showing the way. He stated that he had witnesses Dale win a race a Cleveland Speedway many years ago in what was the called The Ride to Charlotte. Speaking with Dale that was a race that occurred in 1983, Richard said he’s been a Dale McDowell fan ever since.
The FWD/PONY Division was ready to go and for the second time tonight a race would be completed without a single caution as Bruce Kimber took the lead at the start and never look back. Following Kimber across the finish would be Koty Campbell, Grady Stokes, Matt Leonard and Michael Roberts.
The 24 car field for the Shamrock 50 was lined up behind the Mtn View Chevrolet Silverado Official Pace Truck and ready to parade around the 1/3 mile oval to the fans delight, starting with the traditional 4 wide fan salute. As the field came to the green Riley Hickman showed the way to turn 1 as the race leader. As the laps clicked away Hickman began to pull away. Having recently won the SRRS Super Late Model Cabin Fever at Boyd Speedway could he make in two in a row in 2014. As the racers competed for their respected positions throughout the field there was one position that there was no competing as Hickman continued to pull away and slice his way through lapped traffic. Hickman would lead every lap making it 2 for 2 in 2014. Hickman was followed by Jason Hiett, Jason Welshan, Skip Arp (coming from 10th starting position) and Todd Morrow.
A great night of racing as the traditions keep moving on, great job by track officials, concessions stand employees, (I think there’s still a line waiting on the hot and delicious hamburgers). Racing was over by 10:15, Great Job!
