Kyle Cummings and Brian Rickman Top Gumbo Nationals Opening Night
Greenville, Mississippi (10/02/15) – Over 160 cars took part in the opening night of the 9th Annual Harlow’s Casino Gumbo Nationals at Greenville Speedway on a beautiful Friday evening.
With forty-three Mississippi State Championship Challenge Series (MSCCS) Super Late Models registered for battle, four heat races were contested at the gumbo oval.
The first heat race found Sibley, Louisiana's Kyle Cummings advancing from the 8th starting spot to snare the win with Hunter Rasdon, Ray Moore, and 11th starting, Tanner Kellick taking the transfer spots. With the win former Gumbo Nationals champion, Kyle Cummings locked into the pole position for Saturday night’s $10,000-to-win finale.
The second heat race found Brian Rickman from Columbus, Mississippi dominating the event to take the win with Eric Cooley, Jack Sullivan, and Chad Thrash sweeping the transfer spots.
After four bad starts the third heat race finally came to life as four-time Gumbo Nationals champion, Bub McCool from Vicksburg, Mississippi charged to the lead. He was challenged for the lead early in the heat on the high side by New Mexico’s Garrett Alberson. However, McCool ultimately stretched his lead and crossed the finish line with a 2.8 second advantage over Alberson. Josh Putnam and Neil Baggett took the final two transfer spots.
The initial start in the fourth and final heat race was waived off after officials deemed that Billy Moyer Jr. jumped the start. Timothy Culp was promoted to the pole alongside Bubba Harris as Moyer Jr. was pushed back a row. Culp raced to the convincing win with Billy Moyer Jr. rallying to finish 2nd. The man on the move in the heat race was Ronny Lee Hollingsworth, who used the high side of the speedway to advance from the 8th starting spot to a 3rd place finish with Allen Tippen taking the final transfer spot.
MSCCS Super Late Model qualifying for the forty-three entries on hand was paced by Brian Rickman with a 15.852 second lap around the ¼ mile oval.
Saturday night will be the championship night with the $10,000-to-win/$1,000-to-start finale being held. Also on the program will be the Street Stocks battling for $1,500-to-win/$150-to-start, Open Wheel Modifieds racing for $1,500-to-win/$150-to-start ($30 entry fee) and Pure Streets racing for $700-to-win/$100-to-start. Saturday's program will include b-mains and the big finales for all divisions.
In total over $70,000 will be distributed during the huge event. Complete payouts for all divisions may be found at www.GreenvilleSpeedway.net .
Grandstand gates open 4 p.m. on Saturday with the driver’s meeting at 5 p.m. Pit gates open at 2 p.m. Hot laps are slated for 5:30 p.m.
On Saturday night grandstand admission is $20 with kids $5. Saturday night pit admission is $35. Kids ages 6-14 years-of-age are $10 in the pits, and ages 5 & under are free.
There will be a FREE catfish lunch for all drivers and teams on Saturday at noon. Also all drivers will get a FREE Gumbo Nationals t- shirt.
