I love watching old footage and interviews on YouTube of the old drivers from the late 70s to even the early 90s talking about what the world 100 meant to these guys. They would all build new cars from only a thought and a dream. One story that sticks in my mind is a story of Charley Swarts built a new car (I think the first wedge styled car to hit the track) and he wouldn't let anyone see or touch that car. It was a huge secret that himself and his crew chief knew about. Back in those day they loaded that baby up on an open trailer and covered it with tarps so that no one could see it and scramble to copy it the best they could. Chit, they even had a man sleep under the tarp so they could be sure that nobody could see the thing. Moral of the story.. That race meant so much to the pioneers of the sport we love so much. The 100 had a meaning and a place in those guys hearts and it was so prestigious to the drivers, teams, and even the fans. Now these guys run their 100 car the week before, wash it up, tighten some bolts and nuts and bring it to the track. Money has taken over the sport and it's a shame. I will never go to a world 100 for this reason. Back in the day it was really a big deal to win the world 100 and be the best in the world. Now a crown jewel race is basically any race that pays big cash. Smh

They raced stock cars at Knoxville in 1895. Is that a long enough history for you? A lot of Hall of fame drivers raced there. Ernie Derr Ramo Stott, (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) Hucherson, Don White, Some of the Wallaces, And several World 100 winning drivers. Just because it's known for Sprint car racing, don't mean stock cars haven't been there for the special races. And yes it puts on a better race than Eldora 90% of the time. Not saying The world isn't the premier race of the year, but it's about tradition not the racing. There are several places that have better racing, day in and day out.Originally posted by old fan View Postdon't care to go the world is is the only big race I don't go to the Eldora for the party why in the he11 would you sprend that much to get drunk plus the later the year I would rather travel south not north for a race weekend , does Knoxville have the long history I THINK NOT

If you like going to an open wheel track, that is all well and good. But it isn't the capital of late model racing.Originally posted by bloomy18018 View PostSo I take it you haven't been to Knoxville yet... It well, could have been the Late model capital of the world. My firs encounter with Knoxville was The 62 Nationals. This was a run what you brung race. Mods Super Mods Sprint cars No engine limitations Wing are fine. The availability of sprint cars in the area made then the logical choice for weekly shows. The Sprint Cars didn't want to run with anything else. That is why it's a Sprint car track. They have ran LM specials for a long time and the shows never disappoint.Originally posted by MasterSbilt_Racer View PostIf you like going to an open wheel track, that is all well and good. Sprint car track or not, It's one of the best in the country. Why do you think the racers like to race there so much?

I really don't like all the format changes that Eldora, along with many big events have made over the last several years.
I personally like the Qualify, Heats, Consolations, Feature format. You almost need a degree to figure out where people are starting.
