Why #5 for Oneal?

Why won't Bowyer let Oneal run #71? Yea, I know Bowyer is the one footing the bill so he decides the #, I get that part. I also get why he switched Lanigan from #15 to #14 because that is his new # at Stewart-Haas. I just don't know the significance of #5 for Bowyer. Was that his # when he raced on dirt coming up or something?

Oneals son hud is runnin 71 with peak sponsor and others so they look about the same but the number

Obviously it's Bowyer's decision and if I remember correctly O'Neal even asked if he could run the 71 when he joined the team. I'd like to see him be able to run the 71. I wish Bowyer would reconsider.

Since Bowyer was #15 and one of his cars had the same number, I assume he dropped the 1 and made his other car #5. Landers carried the same number when he drove for Bowyer.

Like many, I'd like to see the driver keep their number whoever they race for.

Incorrect. That subject was never brought up. Don could care less what the number is. He won the Lucas Oil title in the 5. Ask Don yourself sometime.
