That's a good list. I remember JD showing up for the SAS race at Toccoa with his own swing arm Rayburn, a limited engine that his dad built and giving Chris Madden all he could handle and finished second with third no where in sight. I have much more respect for the guys who did it the way they did, than some silver spoon family type deal that quits the minute daddy pulls the $$$ plug. The second generation guys like Moyer Jr and Moran bother me less than some others that were handed top shelf national caliber rides to start. Both Devin Moran & Moyer Jr, even though their dads had success and connections they still didn't start out in top shelf equipment, but in leftovers that they had to prepare themselves, that's important. JMO

I know he isn't running either of the late model tours (yet), but Ricky Thornton Jr. is a name that comes to mind. Kid makes a living driving his modified racing in Iowa & the midwest all summer long. Has great sponsors but no family big money to speak of. When put in decent equipment, the boy can definitely shoe a racecar. He qualified for a couple of the Wild West Shootout races with Casey Skyberg's WiSSOTA crate engine late model. Kid deserves to be in a big time late model ride. He would not disappoint.

He had his shot last year at an unlimited budget team with Gressell didn't he? Now, Ed may not be the easiest guy to drive for, but RT walked away from that ride pretty quickly.

There are a lot of guys that have walked out of that Gressel ride.....There has to be something we don't know about that deal.

Another question I should have asked too is who all has one car and one good motor and can run (maybe not a full time national tour) but could give the big names a run for their money on most occasions. So often I hear in interviews or on broadcast where (and I'm being a little dramatic) the driver will say "Well we got a flat tire on the primary car, had to pull out the backup". And then they go out there kick arse. It wasn't that long ago that I don't think too many guys carried back-up cars, including Bloomer. Especially not back-up cars that were just as good as their primary and able to be unloaded and ready to race in 10 minutes.

Some folks have it and some don't. Just the way it is. If I had it my kid, family, friend would be out there in all the best that money and rules will allow.

Back in the day things were a whole lot different. Today, you have to have big money suport from somwhere....

The only real anwere to this is put a cap on what you can spend. This would bring the chance's of some talented kids closer to the playing field, make for better racing, eliminate the falling off of good racers and save this sport... I don't see this happening though.

That was the situation, pure & simple. Ed didn't wanna pay Ricky enough so Ricky to pay his bills. So, Ricky got back in his own car & MADE enough to support his career.

I would imagine most of the newer transporters are leased units... not many have pockets deep enough to fund an outright purchase of a $400,000 unit. The tax advantages favor a lease over ownership... New Trump tax plan excepted.

The engine builders have lease deals too.

He doesn't qualify now as a shoe string racer. But I watched Rusty Schlenk race & win with other peoples stuff they threw away. Yes he has a great team now, and is on the road with a couple of cars and a nice truck. But that didn't happen overnight. Rusty has busted his butt to make his living in the racing industry. He raised a family by wheeling a race car and working on others cars for them. I'm proud to say I have had a small part in helping him along the way. This kid did it the hard way. No family money. No name recognition. No sugar daddy behind the scene...

What gets me is these modifed guys who have a half a million dollar outfit to go run for a 1000 dallars...everybody wants to be a big fish in a little pond rather than step up the challenge...little man syndrome I guess...pathetic
