I-70 Speedway in Missouri going back to dirt 1/2 mile. To Re-Open in 2019.

Great to see a track re-opening. Half-mile tracks are tough to make successful for weekly racing though. I have nothing on the line with this effort, but if it were me, I would seriously consider what was done at Sharon Speedway in Ohio. They built a smaller dirt track inside the larger paved oval utilizing the front straightaway and main grandstands. A smaller track with a configuration similar to Fairbury or Kokomo would produce great racing at I-70.

Glad to see another dirt track open up but, half-miles are hard on motors because you're on the gas longer. 3/8 is the perfect size.

Great post and totally agree......wish them luck no matter what they decide on track layout.

One opening is better than one closing almost any day of the week.

I doubt they run dirt weekly they don't even run weekly at the track they currently own the Former Heartland Park Topeka now Heartland Motorsports Park. All they are doing this year in the dirt at HPT (HMP) is running a couple of sprint car races. They are bigger drag racers than circle track people IMHO

Version I heard is a drag strip is a priority. There’s a second, smaller dirt track that was built adjacent in the waning days, think it ran a year or two before the facility was closed altogether. In this day of delicate machines and over extended racing budgets an attempt to run regularly on the high banked big half mile would be a big challenge.

Hope it continues full speed ahead. I'm always skeptical until the first racing tire hits the dirt.

If they are putting dirt on the existing asphalt track like they are talking, it was insanely fast as both a dirt and an asphalt track. Plus I think it was actually listed as 5/8 mile back then.

Check youtube for some WoO events on dirt back in the mid 80's before it reverted back to asphalt. A better name for it would be Larry Phillips Speedway.
