Turning the old I-70 Speedway in Missouri into a dirt track. There's a lot done. But there is a long way to go. Looks like there are piles of black dirt on the track that have just been dumped. Also looks like the grandstands are down and just the cement remains on the hill side.

Old pavement is being removed new dirt will be put on.
The track will NOT be the original size (Not sure on size). So I'm told.
Concrete is being poured for new seating.

I was hoping not. I doubt it’d make it as the old I70 these days.

Definitely a lot of work to do.

Truthfully I expected for it to go as a commercial development or at least a drag strip. Looks like I may well be wrong. Several tracks within close proximity, be interesting.

The 1st race that I saw there was a WoO Sprint car show. It was unbelievable how fast they got around that track.

The piles of “black dirt” you’re seeing at the bottom of the track are the asphalt that has been peeled off. I don’t think there has been any new dirt brought in yet. Also, the grandstands in that last picture are the stands for the smaller dirt track that was built behind the larger pavement track. They face to the north and they are still there. The concrete stands that were facing south on the pavement track are the ones they took out and are in the process of rebuilding.

Great choice to take out the pavement and make the track smaller.

Are they planning to open this season ?
I'm sure the almost nonexistent winter we've had is helping their progress.

Best asphalt race ever saw was an I70 ASA race. Trickle passed Reffner with two to go. So many great Midwest asphalt names; Shear, Phillips, Senneker, Miller, Bivens, etc. Am a believer in cycles but hard to see how asphalt short tracks ever make a comeback. If I70 shortens the track they might have something, not sure a weekly schedule is the right thing.

I know everyone hates big tracks but the two shows I went to at I70 in the early 80's were outstanding. End of the year, unsanctioned they had every big name late model as well as sprint car in the country....I think Freddie Smith won first year on the late models (Swartz spun with a lap car while leading) and believe Jack Pennington won the next year (as well as rain and wrecks)....(Wedge cars first year, small bodies second). Wolfgang and Kauffman I believe won the sprints..

I went down there in the late 70's and 1980 for the World Cup 400. That was a bad*** asphalt track and drew great fields of cars. Great to see it reopening.
If they make the dirt track the same size as the asphalt track I hope they do a specials only format. No way racers could afford to run weekly on a track that size.

Seen a few Artgo races there, Steve Carlson and Tracy Schuler won them, 95,96 I believe I was in high school. Was a very cool track. Cars were snapping the centers of their Bassett wheels and going over the wall in 1 and 2. The wall was only about knee high back then..
