Time sure does fly!!!
My cousin called Eldora Speedway for '94 World 100 tickets, but found out about the Dream. We were new to the dirt tracking game then having just started back up in '90 and '91. This was WAY before the internet, and I don't believe any of us were subscribing to any racing papers at the time either. We all decided to go for it and bought tickets. We were familiar with Eldora from some tv footage we had seen, most likely the WOO Sprints.
We left at 3 a.m. on Thursday morning. It was myself,my Dad,my cousin, and my uncle. My cousin borrowed his father-in-law's RV which was based on an Econoline van. It was more or less a glorified church van with barely enough room for the four of us. We left from my uncle's house, and his neighbor just happened to wake up as we were getting ready to leave. All he could see was the top of the van,and he thought it was an ambulance. The next morning the neighbor tries to call to check on my aunt and uncle to see if something was wrong, but we were gone of course and somehow my aunt and everybody else was out of pocket also. LOL. He assumed my uncle had had some sort of health issue.
I had just gotten hired permanently a few months earlier so I had to borrow vacation time to go. I was 25 and the racing thing was still new and very fresh. I had only been to a few local tracks here. I had seen some pretty decent specials at I30 Speedway, but the Topless 100 the year before was the biggest thing I had ever been to. I thought that and Batesville were really something, and it was pretty cool. Nothing like what was awaiting though.
This was the first time I had ever been to Kentucky and Ohio, and I got to visit Indiana for the first time on the way home also. I love to travel still, and this was a big deal!
We got to the track Thursday evening, and was amazed at the size and banking! We got to experience the partying and dancing in the grandstands and the campground. Camped by two fellows from New York.
As for the racing,my jaw dropped at the speed and the sheer number of cars. It was awesome walking through the pits! It was the first time I had seen Bloomquist,Boggs,Moran,Larry Moore,Duvall, and many other big time drivers race!I remember Billy Moyer winning the Nightmare on Friday night with a perfectly timed start that, needless to say,was questioned by many of the fans.
It was awesome to see Freddy take that inaugural win! Never will forget it. We wound up going back to the Dream 3 more times, and twice for the Million. After this experience,we started going to big shows all over the country!
I'm just sitting here reminiscing about the old days. It was a simpler time before I got cynical and jaded about racing and other things. It sure does seem like things were better back then!!
