Oh, don’t get me wrong, just saying, Portsmouth, that’s a pass. Was just at Myrtle, there are some empty lots. But I think they were old hotels. Trust me, the days of 3-9 stories hotels there are over. 20+ stories. Ours was 23 because you don’t count 13, 24 floors, they have a new one that I assume is actually 26. It’s a Hilton, as was the one we stayed at.

I’d say in the next 10 years the view there is going to change a lot. Just a huge influx of money. We enjoyed it even in peak season.

I've lived near there since I got out of school back in the 80s.......and grew up about 50 miles north of there in NC along the coast.

What you are seeing with the empty lots are exactly as you described.....old hotels that have been demolished to make fancier nicer ones.

The view has changed dramatically in the last 20 years, and will continue to change as long as people want to come spend the money........I know the place you stayed at, hopefully you found a place near it called magnolias for breakfast or lunch.

No I didn’t man. Didn’t even see it. And we drove up Ocean Blvd, Kings Hwy, and walked the Boardwalk. Did some putt putting, Skywheel, ocean swimming, beach walking, kayaking, Ripleys Aquarium, and are at a lot of places.

My wife and I’s favorite is the new Wicked Tuna at the 2nd Ave Pier.

its not the bargain vacation it used to be , but if you look around you can find some good deals......a whole lot of big business and big money have changed our mom and dads vacation myrtle beach,some good some not so good.

They have a wicked tuna down south from myrtle beach in a little fishing village called Murrels Inlet.....that whole area is a very cool spot to find and some of the best seafood you'll eat anywhere.

I am 62 now-as a kid we took family vacations to Mrytle Beach (from Tennessee). We stayed at at the Starlitte Lodge -room had a kitchenette for $150.00 for a full week! As a high schooler went there for graduation party week.
My dad said the first time he was there- the Harmony House Motel ( which was ocean front at the old pavilion) was the last building on the south end. Everything between there & the State park was just sand dunes. As everything else in this world- time changes most everything. Heck- I remember having to get off the couch to change channels on the lack/white tv that was connected to an antenna with 3 channels- lol!
On Portsmouth:
We have stayed downtown at the Holiday Inn but now stay out on Hwy. 23 north of town. Ribbers has awesome steaks & the river wall murals will get your attention.

Yes, BBQ, owned by the same people. Next time I go, I will go to Murrels Inlet. Literally opened the Wicked Tuna at the pier just before we got there. I only knew of the one in Murrells Inlet, lucked into the new one.

Oh yeah Fox and BBQ. Changed a lot. Still not crazy expensive, but expensive. Peak time of year, oceanfront 3 bedroom is $5k plus for 6 nights.

But I will return. Still pretty nice, nice weather, stuff to do.

My complaints are the Carolina drop knuckle heads, and them beach gift ships everywhere.

My wife says those trucks look like a dog taking a dump......stupidest thing I've seen kids do to a vehicle in a long time.....and as a kid we did a lot of stupid things to make our cars look cool, when they really weren't.

And there are some really nice trucks they do it too. Ocean BLVD sucks, and Kings Highway , and ya got these knuckleheads doing loops. Make it ridiculous, but cops are heavy. Motorcycle cops, undercover in Mustangs, Mules/UTV’s, and they were getting them left and right.

I highly advise if you are driving, which I know you know, point A to point B, and don’t get cute.

Truly never knew that stuff existed, till we got there. Might have seen one or two in Greensboro(stopped on way down), but MYB was nuts.

My wife is a HUGE fan of the group Alabama so we knew that one day we would like to go to Myrtle Beach and visit The Bowery where they got their start.

While there were some good parts of the trip,that's the only time I have ever been ready to come home from a vacation. I don't know at what point the wheels came off,but it was one bad thing after another in MB. It culminated in someone breaking into our hotel room,and going through our stuff. Only time to this day that has happened anywhere. They didn't get anything of ours,but that was not cool at all. We love the Carolinas,but we won't be back to Myrtle Beach.

I may catch flack for this,but it was also during a Mustang convention in MB. They just ain't my favorite cars,and they were everywhere. 90 percent of them were yellow with a black top,and most of them rode around in first or second gear all of the time. Sorry,not sorry.

We had been to Charleston before M.B,and loved it. Went back there the next year,and more than made up for the bad vacay the year before

Speaking of vacation,please say a prayer for my mother-in-law. Our vacation was supposed to start the 14th,but we had to postpone it due to my mother-in-law being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. It's advanced,and she will have 6 months of chemo after the debulking surgery.

While there were some good parts of the trip,that's the only time I have ever been ready to come home from a vacation. I don't know at what point the wheels came off,but it was one bad thing after another in MB. It culminated in someone breaking into our hotel room,and going through our stuff. Only time to this day that has happened anywhere. They didn't get anything of ours,but that was not cool at all. We love the Carolinas,but we won't be back to Myrtlee Beach.

I may catch flack for this,but it was also during a Mustang convention in MB. They just ain't my favorite cars,and they were everywhere. 90 percent of them were yellow with a black top,and most of them rode around in first or second gear all of the time. Sorry,not sorry.

Speaking of vacation,please say a prayer for my mother-in-law. Our vacation was supposed to start the 14th,but we had to postpone it due to my mother-in-law being diagnosed with ovarian cancer. It's adbanced,and she will have 6 months of chemo after the debulking surgery.

Prayers going out Allen......the city took a few steps back about 15 years ago when MB got very big very fast and the city fathers were too busy counting the money to worry about things like safety, riffraff,and crime and it just got out of control over there.

the city has new leadership and that leadership knows the beach and the boulevard is part of the big draw so they don't play around a whole lot down there anymore......maybe even to the point of over reacting with the ticketing and presence.

As long as you don't mess up( even a little bit) down there along the strip you'll be fine and it's pretty safe during normal hours......which I'm fine with , I used to basically live on that boulevard as a teenager and remember it with great fondness as a spot where you could impress the tourist girls with your cool car, long hair, and surfboard.

It's a really beautiful area away from all the gimmicks, putt putts and all you can eat crableg joints and to some degree even all that is kinda cool if you find the right ones......ive traveled in and out of there a good bit since the late 70s and its been pretty cool watching it evolve from what it was to what it is but like everything ,with that comes a certain element of people that like to prey on others.

My bride and I both have a sidearm fairly close by most times to even the playing field for those folks( hope it never comes to that)......that south end of the area is my favorite place to be( pawleys island, litchfield beach, Garden City, Murrels inlet ,Surfside Beach etc).....it's less commercial, more old beach vibe, and close enough to the cool stuff to do up in Myrtle.

And btw.....Charleston and its beaches and islands adjacent is one of the finest city's in the US

If you cant stay at the holiday inn downtown, stay in Waverly or Jackson, take my word on that.

you might want to rethink about waverly. i stayed there the week before the dtwc last year and it was $100 a night so i reserved a room for the next week and was told it would be the same price ,but guess what ??? i was charged $150 a night. i called and was told that it was a higher rate cause there was a race in portsmouth.

i will never stay there again.

I can imagine when they first started growing it was a shock. I think now it’s pretty good though.

Only thing I’ll say is there are junkies who hang around the Boardwalk. Very sad, and makes ya shake your head at the same time.

The Bowery had a pretty good local guy playing I think it was Friday night. Didn’t go there though, with the kids, didn’t wanna venture there at like 9.

Sorry to hear about your MIL, cancer is awful. You don’t realize how bad it is till it hits close to home.

Didn’t hit the Alabama theatre. To be honest, them and Willie were two of the worst concerts I’ve seen. Though that theatre would be neat.

Sorry to hear about your crappy MYB stay. If you go back, Hilton has two newer hotels there. Oceanfront, and great service.
