I remember when the track would have a kid walk around selling programs and racing papers. My first taste of responsibility was selling the 'Hawkeye Racing News' at multiple tracks during the summer (they would send me like 100 copies, I would sell them and send payment for what I sold back the HRN)...

I still have a couple box of Mid American Racing papers
From the 80's and 90's. A lot of the tracks are long gone now

I bought a National Speedway Directory at Eldora in 1995,and I still have it. With the advent of the internet and Google Maps I have looked in the book and then tried to find the tracks listed online. Needless to say, many of the tracks in the book aren't running anymore.

I can't imagine what another 25 years will bring.

Video might have killed the radio star but the internet sure killed the racing papers. Seemed like every time I renewed my subs to them they went bye bye; Hawkeye, Speed Sport, several others including my favorite, the west's Racing Wheels, out of Vancouver, WA.

Guy named Gary Sterner ran it but the guts of the paper was the indefatigable Gary Jacob. Based in Turlock, CA he personally covered over 100 events a year for decades, often showing up at a southern Cal track one night and one in OR,WA, AZ or NV the next night. He loved the stockers and they loved him. The west coast legend died in '06 and the paper a short time after.

The internet is ok but it doesn't come near touching the great coverage the weekly papers did.

We sold a lot of 'programs' as well, would include a typed up sheet with updated point standings from each class. You could buy the program for a buck or two with the sheet or sometimes they would sell the sheet separate for a dime or quarter; it was the only way you could keep up with the standings! Guarantee you if you ask old Larry Kemp who was the best program salesman he ever had it would be me! Once had a knife pulled on me when I wouldn't 'give' the guy a free point sheet ( I was maybe 10 years old, didn't end well for him thanks to others in the stands)....

Remember the Dixie Twister and C&C Express driven by Billy Scott using Larry Martin chassis. When Cherokee was the big half mile and a weekly race had Billy Scott, Mike Duvall, Freddie Smith, Bennet Clontz, CL Pritchett, etc, and the cars looked like real camaros. Going to the fights and watching the races breakout.

Remember When

Remember watching Wally and Randall Fowler's teams decked out in burgundy and white fighting Maurice and Marty Ward's teams decked out in their Carolina Tool green and white on the backstretch at Tri-City, now Harris, Speedway. A guy jumped the back stretch fence, ran into the fight, grabbed a carolina tools hat, and jumpers the fence back into the bed of his pickup. Fun times as a kid going to the race track weekly.

Remember when Carolina Tool sponsored multiple cars including the Wards, Hot Rod Lamance, Buck Simmons, etc.Remember Lee McCallister when he had his white #44 camaro and green #44 mustang. Ran well and won in both in the same year.
