Dirt SLMs on asphalt

Seen where the southern all star dirt racing series are having a race September 20th at my local asphalt track which I race at of Anderson Motor Speedway paying $12,000 to win.

I’ve always heard how this used to be done back in the 80s/early 90s. Always wondered what it would be like this day and age. Looks like I get my chance.

I'm curious how many cars it will actually draw. My gut says not many but hopefully there will be a lot of teams want to support the opportunity.

I saw a video of a car there testing, personally it didn't look very exciting but some of these races on dirt aren't very exciting now days either lol!

I believe they did it somewhere around 02' or 03' and Ronnie Johnson won it driving Barry Wright House Car.

B J Parker had one at BIR in birmingham AL back then , I did not participate but was thinking Mike Head won it but not sure .....

UDLMCS aka "the Ken Kinney series" used to do these at the track in Punta Gorda, FL.

According to DoD it was 2001 and Ronnie Johnson won it.

We ran Hawkeye Downs with dirt late models multiple times in the late 80's-90's, actually used dirt tires on one of the occasions (McCreary EC2's); wore them through the cords in 25 laps. The old Brunswick or Waycross was not much different....

Back in early 90’s Freddy Smith won the last dirt race at the old concord speedway and came back the next week and won the first pavement race in the same car with asphalt slicks.

SAS is so desperate for races they scheduled an asphalt track? I know SAS had an asphalt series back in the day. But that was a long time ago.

i've seen some old videos of dirt late models running at 411 when it was asphalt. Jimmy Owens seemed to be the one to beat on those.

Southern national speedway in Kenly NC did a one off dirt late models on asphalt sometime in the late 2000's if i remember right. Wasn't many cars and the racing wasnt anything special. Hope SAS has better luck

Need to tighten them up and get a sway bar installed.

Joey Coulter was turning times almost 2 seconds faster in his test session than the regular asphalt late models that run there during regular events.

Not too surprising as his late model is around 800 lbs lighter and has around 500 HP more than the crate engine that a lot of the locals run.
