Anyone out there (successfully) running older (pre 2017) chassis?

Things do wear out. Probably bigger issue than the chassis is the components, axle tubes get tweaked, spindle bent etc. Average guy doesn't have the time or funds to keep up with the car-that touch against the wall that you think didn't hurt anything. 'New' car tends to fix all the small details that have just been overlooked. On the chassis side, as I said, they do just start requiring more work themselves. I have a seven year old car that I use the 'grinder and welder' on quite often; I weld up the cracks I catch but can almost guarantee there are more that I am not seeing....

While I do get that it does make me wonder if the older cars perhaps have an advantage somewhere that the newer ones don't.

I think it says something when a touring guy isn't competitive, gets a new chassis and suddenly is fast again. Seems to happen a lot lately.

That has more to do with their maintenence program and not understanding their race cars. Those same guys generally also run better if they put their ego aside and take the car back to the builder and let them make it right again. Everyone has a false perception that all the big touring guys have this elite racing program. That is not the case now days. Their are probably less than ten national teams in the country that if i went in their shop and started picking through their cars i couldn't find multiple issues. Their is a big reason Davenports magical eldora car goes home and gets stripped and all new parts put on it after every time they run it. New cars have new parts bolted in where their supposed to go at the dimensions they're supposed to be.

Making sure the parts are correct can be the simple fix; quick example would be the parts manufacturer that made a jig for lower control arms and supplied numerous teams-except it was not the same as the chassis manufacturer's lower....Everyone wants to save a buck and get a deal, better make sure the copy is correct...

They probably set themselves up right out of competition like Overton last year.

As others have said that sounds more like a maintenance issue as opposed to any new advancements.

Norris won a few times this year in a 16 xr1. I don’t think it’s been raced that much though

Lol! Sounds like these professional race teams need to come to 4m and get educated about racing.

It must be the technological advancements then! Lol. You know it's not. Pretty naive to assume that just because guys have money they know what they're doing.

On another note I wonder how much repeatability factors in. Heard quite a few stories of 'bad' chassis from Longhorn, Rocket...

The group of guys who can afford to do this and the group that capable of building and maintaining the equipment are completely different, with a couple of exceptions. The first group hires 1 guy from the second group. These cars are way more complicated than most people can come close to maximizing and not inadvertently screwing up.

I will agree that a portion of the top drivers are not into the setup, maintenance, or building of the cars, but they employ people that know what they're doing. There's something to be said for being around it everyday and the experience that comes along with that.
