one of my sprint car fanatic friends said they announced during the I-70 High Limit race Tuesday night that they would be reconfiguring the track to a 3/8 mile similar to Wheatland during the off season, I can't find any announcement about the track size being reduced, anyone else heard this, didn't the Lucas Oil Late Model Series race they held there a couple years ago result in a lot of drivers experiencing motor issues?

I was at I-70 the last time Lucas Late models were there and yes the cars were overheating. It was very hot, like 90 plus degrees and the cars were running wide open. I also heard them say on Flo during the High Limit broadcast they would be reconfiguring the track to 3/8 size.Originally posted by g_hughes View Postone of my sprint car fanatic friends said they announced during the I-70 High Limit race Tuesday night that they would be reconfiguring the track to a 3/8 mile similar to Wheatland during the off season, I can't find any announcement about the track size being reduced, anyone else heard this, didn't the Lucas Oil Late Model Series race they held there a couple years ago result in a lot of drivers experiencing motor issues?

it needs shortened, and my favorite track of all time was the old I-70 dirt track when the Welds owned it. Until they take all the aero stuff out of racing the bigger tracks will continue to sufferEverybody Love Everybody!

Was there once or twice about a zillion years ago when it was paved and the asphalt cars were a big deal. Casey Shuman has done an amazing job bringing the old joint back to life after being an overgrown weed patch for several years. I think there's great potential there and think that shortening it would be a good idea.

I posted this a few days back under the Pennsboro thread.

"Another track that reconfigured but didn't learn any lessons. I-70 Speedway. Still way too big and a killer on wide open engines.
Now it really isn't in the hotbed of late model country for one thing but there are regional tours out there. I just got done watching the video of Ryan Gustin running away with the MLRA feature event of 14 cars. It was fast car show.
Maybe the folks behind I-70 thought sprint car shows would be more their forte in special events but the Super shows I've watched from there were not worth it. Who knows, in looking at the current photos of Pennsboro it almost looks like an ovalish version of an autocross track going wide to narrow to wide with the bridges involved. Maybe guys will have use brakes and actually drive the cars and that in itself could produce - a show. Good luck."
I actually worked a couple NASCAR Touring events at I-70 in the pavement days, and worked my first truck series race there. This would have been like 98-99 and the place was worn out in the pavement but still wicked fast. Big banks and a long sweeping backstretch meant they only burped the throttle going around there. When the big track in Kansas was going to be built the folks at I-70 knew their days were numbered as a paved track because without big time specials they would never afford a re-pave in that configuration, and that place needed it, badly. It was fun and interesting though.
When I seen that they were bringing it back to life I was interested in that project. It is a real storied track in the Midwest and they have a location which should work. But after watching a couple shows from there on the tube I can't say I was impressed at the product. Just not a track to take dirt supers to in the current configuration. Lessons to be learned for other tracks and promoters. If there isn't going to be any significant changes in how these cars are evolving then it will limit where you can expect to put on a good race product.
Political correctness,...is the inability to speak the truth about the obvious.

The extremely powdery dirt causes about the same or more issues to heating problems as the large wide open track does on engine temps as it will pack a radiator full pretty quickly
