What exactly happened/is happening there? Was it sold and permanently closed? The only thing I can find online is an article about rezoning the property.

My guess is the family isnt interested in running it as a race track anymore. They had big plans for expansion and so forth, but deaths in the family kinda ran the wheels off their plans. Micky Swim's son Mike was the scion and heir apparent, but he died of cancer young in 2007 . Mike was to take over and run Dixie & Rome Speedways. Then Mickey's wife Martha got cancer and they closed both tracks down to spend time with her before she finally passed in 2022. Then add in some unfortunate events and bad press for a race track and you can see why maybe the enthusiasm to continue isn't there. I grew up going to Rome, Dixie and other Atlanta area tracks, but Rome was always my favorite. Even so Rome struggled and they've played around with its regular schedule a few times, originally it was a Sunday night track, then in the 80's it was a Friday night track, then they tried running it simultaniously against their other track, "Dixie" on Saturday nights. Maybe its for other reasons, but my guess is they are tired. Maybe they'll let it lay quiet and reopen later.
