As billet stated, it's the time and certification, more than the cheap parts. The engine, new from GM, costs twice what a comparable performance engine costs that's not intended for spec racing.Modern Day Spec Wedge Racing

Missed your post. I'm the type, return the engine to the builder. Does ANYONE run an engine straight out-the-crate from GM? Doubt it at a $100K race. I mean except for those broke locals that live 10 miles from the track and are purely racing for fun. Their motor might have 5000 laps on it with new valve springs. Could win anyway?Originally posted by billetbirdcage View Post
While it might be simple to bolt it back together, the problem is whoever assembles it and seals is responsible for it being legal. So they actually have to check everything as its likely the parts was given back to the winner in a box, thus they had an opportunity to alter parts out of the view of the rebuilder (IE acid porting, regrind cam, or etc). So rebuilder has to verify everything is correct and within tolerances before he assembles and seals or he's responsible from then on out.

If you get a good one, you can. I don't know if anyone at that race was or not. The dyno will tell you if it's a good one. Racers running that race don't really have a problem spending another $6k to get 5hp though. That's a fair point.Originally posted by KTMLew View Post

So, if a crate engine dynos 800 horsepower, something's wrong? LOL!Originally posted by MasterSbilt_Racer View Post

Don't all the 604's dyno at like 550HP? I mean they are 420ish factory, then you buy the carb that's worth 25HP, the header's worth 20HP, the carb spacer worth 15HP, the timing box worth 15HP, the plugs and wires worth 10HP, and the selected valve springs worth 20HPOriginally posted by jog49 View Post
