    Another good dirt track gone

Bakersfield Speedway in California is ceasing operation before it's 80th season in 2025. The 1/4 mile has seen asphalt and dirt over their long history, being dirt for about the last 40 years. Although, technically, it is moving down the freeway to be known as Bakersfield Speedway at Kevin Harvick's Kern County Speedway it's not really going to be the same. Kern County came into being a couple of decades ago thanks to the Collins family who built the long- gone Mesa Marin Raceway, an asphalt 1/2 mile outside Bakersfield. A well run and popular track that ran the first NASCAR Truck race and ran Late Models to Sprints it closed to the creeping urban sprawl of Bakersfield. The Collins family starting building Kern County just in time for one of the deep recessions and it ended up taking several years to get in operation. Cup retiree Harvick got involved a couple of years when he came home to Bako. There's both 1/4 and 1/2 mile asphalt tracks and a 1/4 mile dirt track. The dirt track has been sparsely used and is being stretched out to 1/3 and 2,000 seats added. The old Bako track, run by the Schweitzers for the last 21 years, was an institution and we're going to miss our couple of trips per year down there to try to beat the locals on the bone slick challenging little track, usually without the success we hope for. End of an era.

It appears we may have lost Brushcreek too. Website is down and their one late model race of the year just got moved. So much for "preserving the dirt oval" that was in the press release last year when it changed hands.

I've seen Brushcreek on a couple of 2025 Schedules so we will see if that facility in Peebles, Ohio is gone to. The track is up for sale.

Ohio Valley SCDRA & Ohio Valley Legends Car Series has Brushcreek Motorsports Complex on their schedules for Thursday, July 3rd, 2025

Correction on Bakersfield's size. The old track is 1/3, not 1/4 as i Posted. Those little numbers get harder to see every year.
