He did as far as racing his own stuff out of his shop full-time. Is this him just selling his own stuff or is he also no longer running the G.R. Smith ride?

His schedule still shows the Eldora races plus World Finals at Charlotte as of now.

Naw, the only person that might have influenced Madden to retire would have been Pierce. They were WoO competitors an Bobby was becoming dominate in a hurry. Bloomer is the present G.O.A.T. in Lucas Oil but Davenport is likely to surpass him before the end of the year. Then there's RTJ. He has gotten to 51 wins in a hurry and will, likely, pass both of those G.O.A.T.S. before all is said and done. He is very good at milking all the potential out of a car it possesses and the Koehlers have now put him in the ideal package to do so.

I highly doubt any of the people mentioned in this post has anything to do with maddens decision. Non of maddens children seem to have the interest and this is not uncommon. This sport typically creates children who love it and want nothing more than to follow in dad's foot steps or the polar opposite. Nothing in between and no rhyme or reason as to who gets what. Madden has always been a very religious and family oriented person. If his children aren't naturally taking a interest in racing it's only natural that he would loose the passion aswell. Their are certainly things I'm sure he would've liked to check on the list but he has nothing to prove to anyone. He has accomplished what most could only dream of. If this is the end for him. I will truly miss seeing him on track. Weather you liked him out not he was always a factor

How many members here are under age of 50? Most of us are getting old. Tastes change. I went to my last dirt race 10 or so years ago. Once it became super secretive @ the track, in the pits, I was done. I just hope he gets to live another 20-30 years and this isn't health related.

...or how many of us are over 80? I'm still at it and still enjoy it with an occasional ride. Of course there aren't as many other things to get as excited about as 20 or 50 years ago.

His father was a big part of his racing and he died suddenly at the beginning of the season on the way home after winning in South Georgia. I've known a few racers over the years who were close with their dad's thru racing that suddenly quit when they pass. With some time off to mourn maybe he'll return, if not he has my respect and sympathy. I've watched him run going back to 98' when I started at Carrera Shocks and he was always a force to reckon with in our region, especially behind the wheel of the Barry Wright house car. Maybe they can team up again... Time will tell.
