Weekly Racing & Week day Racing

Your preference.

With all of the talk about how many divisions during the UMP Summer Nationals shows, what would be the ideal number of divisions for specials events / touring series races and regular weekly shows the the local race tracks across the country?





My Preference

Week day show 3 classes max including touring series
weekly shows 4 / 5 max

1 or 2 top tier divisions
1 or 2 mid tier divionns
1 or 2 low tier division

Touring division Weekday 2 classes max unless it is an area where car count is light. Then 3 classes could be tolerable. The main class should be the first feature Weekends - perhaps 4 classes at most if the place can run a efficient show

Normal weekly show - the best tracks are 4 classes max typically. The sure sign of a struggling track is one that keeps adding classes to where they end up with a 7 division show with 60 total cars or something along those lines. For a long long time, 4 was the most you would see. Late models, mods, sportsman & street stocks would be the typical lineup. Sportsman have phased out most places in IL & hornets have taken their place in a lot of areas

So many tracks have dropped super late models so they run the pro late model, A mod, B mod, street stocks, hornets & maybe a midget class or something else for 6 divisions. More of a quantity over quality approach out of necessity. I get why the tracks do it but it really doesn't provide much incentive to me to attend. Really think dirtcar would be better served to figure out how to get the super late & crate late model blended into 1 class that makes sense for all involved. Same for modifieds. That ship has probably sailed never to return to port sadly.

As an example, took a quick look at Macon Speedway so far this year. Their regular classes appear to have been 6 classes drawing high 50's/low 60's total cars & one night with 7 classes that drew like 76 cars. So around 10 cars average per class.

I guess I am pretty spoiled living in Central Pa as none of the tracks have more than three classes, most only two classes even on the weekends. After chasing dirt track racing with sprint cars & dirt late models for 35 years, these old bones can not tolerate sitting for five or six hours anymore. I might be the exception, but I would willingly pay $5 more to only have two or three divisions on a weekly basis. If I lived in an area that routinely ran 5, 6, or 7 divisions for a regular show, I would have to find a new hobby. I sometimes have trouble sitting on my lazy boy watching on Flo or Darkvision with tracks all those divisions.

They talked about this on the Dirt Reporters on DoD yesterday. I forget if it was Kovac or Turner that said it (I think it was Kovac), but they pitched the same idea that I've always had...you run the headline series as quickly as possible while filling in an undercard qualifying between the heats, LCS and A Mains, then run the rest after the A-Main. This way you can run six classes and let the people that aren't interested leave when the headliner is done.

When I go to the races, I want to see as much racing as possible, but don't hold up the headline show. Let the fans that want/need to leave early get out of there. I don't understand the obsession some have with doing things like cutting hot laps or B/C Mains. I want to see the Late Models out there as much as possible. Just keep the show moving and get the headliners over as quickly as possible.
