Engineering is engineering. They look at the global picture of "what's wrong" with a car and try to find ways to fix it. Some are certainly better at it than others.

"What's wrong" is very difficult to determine if you are looking at a machine that is foreign to you, where you have no background in what wrong things work due to other trade offs.

Problem recognition is much more difficult than applying physics to fix a known problem.

Exactly people act like you can just higher an engineer and "fix" anything. Rumley is a engineer who's devoted his life to making dirt latemodels better and he still doesn't have the "perfect" car. He's also stated on record that they still don't have a complete understanding of all the things the "device" did. This is coming from the guy that invented it. I would imagine the new car has more changes resulting from their recent testing than anything else.

I kinda go back and forth on if he's sandbagging on knowing what it did and just can't figure out a good way to do most of it, or he really doesn't know. I think it's the former. I mean I know at least 4 or 5 things it fixed and I'm not the inventor. But, to go forward, you need a good understanding of which ones are most important to keep and the creativity to do it within the rules.

This goes back 25+ years ago. The SMARTEST race car engineer I’ve ever known was not an engineer at all —-- his degree, Masters degree no less, was in Culinary Arts. He was a Chef, world traveled, the whole bit. But his mind wrapped around engineering and mathematics, and race cars as it applied. Some that knew him like I did said he was a genius in the literal sense. He could look at a, for example, Rocket or Bloomquist car and tell you in layman's terms what was different, and why, and what it did differently than others cars/chassis. And the effects thereof.


Nonetheless, all race car engineers are not created equal.

the frame is built differently at least around the halo on the car from last weekend. maybe a 1.3. I also noticed it didnt have the normal carbon fiber seat rocket 1 always runs

I find it hard to believe an engineer from Tony Stewarts sprint car team is trying to help get the Rocket house car dialed in properly. Heck , the way Donnie Shatz runs this year is not a good sign the TSR engineer knows how to make a dirt track car run well. I believe B Shepp when he says he found what the Rocket needed during the Summer Nationals when he tried some things on his own Rocket chassis.
