Ah, those were the days and I only had a year to go before graduating high school. Wouldn't trade those times for anything.

I helped Joe Ross jr that year I think he won about 7 or 8 features and was rookie of the year. Ran the whole season with a cast crank 406 in an old Shaw car. Great days

Was Santa Fe (Illinois) NASCAR sanctioned? I'm surprised not to see names like Provenzano or Izzo, unless I missed them.

Notice how Billy Moyer was called Junior back then.

Over 1,000 late model drivers in 9 states. And I think back then that was all pretty much east of the Mississippi. Quincy IL was a nascar sanctioned track & never had UMP races until the 2000's. Not sure what Pevely, Granite City, etc were doing back then. Iowa was heavy into the nascar or IMCA sanction back then as well and is still mostly an IMCA track.

Heck, 4 of that first 10 raced Macon on a weekly basis. And maybe 5 if Bob Pierce was running there back then. I'm guessing he was a traveler by those days.

I found this great article about Sante Fe. I had to look up about SF being NASCAR sanctioned, too. How ironic that weekly NASCAR sanctioned races started in 1987. It's about halfway down in the article.

Pevely, St Charles, and Belleville were all part of Allied. Ran modifieds, more similar to late models than current UMP style.
Highland was similar.
Godfrey ran super modifieds.
And I believe granite City was NASCAR.

So none of those tracks really contributed to this list. Making it even more impressive how many drivers there were.

Watched a lot of those guys growing up in a standard Saturday night race at Brownstown.

Really good memories of those times.

Don't feel to old, the first UMP National Champion is still racing (and raced for many years before UMP started)....

What were the 3 races with over 140 late models? This is pre Dream so I'll guess World 100 (obvious answer), DTWC & North South 100
