What is Going on with Tire Wear in SLMs?

Realize Hoosier is not the only one with issues, American Racer has some of its own problems.....

One option with a touring pro stock group we run with on occasion is 11" asphalt take-offs that you can cut/groove/sipe to your heart's content. At $20 a pop and on drier, dustier tracks they're a steal and can run with the Hoosier LM tires and we usually can get 3 nights out of them. The purses are mostly in the $1-2,000 to win range and they help take a little of the sting away for the hobby racers, which most of us are in any division.

And he blew one last night.

And this is my original point. DJ drove his typical race (through the middle to low on the track) until he had to push trying to catch up to the 20rt. When he went up to the wall and picked up his pace,,,, pop goes the Hoozier... But somehow the 20rt can pull out and away at every restart driving really hard from 50 laps in....

17m drove his ( ! ) off keeping the car under him and minding his tires until about 15 to go... Couldn't catch the 20rt because his tires "sealed over". It's just odd. For what it is worth I really would like to see 17m win another globe before he hangs it up. He is one of my all time favorites..

I didn't see see if 32 had a flat or not, but I understand he was rim riding all night.

49 had a tire going soft before he was passed. That why he had to hustle it and it ultimately failed. The tire was otherwise unhurt with lots of tread on it.

My local asphalt track lets us run Cobra tires which are the same price as Hoosiers for the mini stock option anyway. Can get a whole season out of 1 set. I've seen where late model guys have ran hundreds of laps on a set in testing with no drop off. I know its not apples to apples with asphalt/dirt but it is nice for us to also have an option to take the sting of tire costs away. Its now over $600 for a set of hoosier ministock tires and we only get $500 to win.

The 'old' 3 seems to be the choice when the issue of tire wear comes in (yes, that is what Davenport had on). Not good for the local guy who didn't realize he needed to buy up all he could before the switchover....

After watching the NE Modifieds, which I'm a big fan of, last night at the Fonda, N.Y. track it appears that American Racer will probably be getting some phone calls just like Hoosier. The 200 lapper on the 1/2 mile was run in two 100 lap segments and very few cars made it through one segment without losing a tire or two. Opposite of the SLM problems with the right rears the big block Mods were with the LR. These cars mostly run a left side Panhard/ J bar which tend to pull the entire left side of the car off the ground and the ride in them beats the tires and the driver up pretty badly. Tire failures started in only a few laps in both segments and it's been a very looong time since I've seen that happen. On a side observation I haven't noticed the Southern SLM groups that run the AR tires have that problem, or am I just missing it?

I'm in the southeast and yes, the American Racers have issues as well (at least the spec tire, rf seems to be the biggest issue). I do understand the crazy loads, huge camber gains and people not running enough air pressure, but have seen it happen with their recomendations as well....I believe American Racer is coming out with a 'new' spec rf to combat the problem.
