Ohlins builds a very good shock, but whoever valved it could do the same to pretty much any modern canister shock,

how many people are experts at Valving shocks for lm's? for sprints? for midgets? for DIRTcar mods? for A mods? for stock cars? are we talking 50 people total? 200? what is the skill needed to do this? is it a science or is it all just trial & error? does a computer do it and the "expert" just programs the cpu? i dont know what is entailed in "valving"....please do tell if you know. It seems that the common perception is the brand doesnt matter Any shock companies product could be the best if they have an expert at valving...Everybody Love Everybody!

It's just basic knowledge of building shocks, following the mfg information, and then sometimes applying a little idea here or there. Then you test what you have.Originally posted by ftfiowa View Posthow many people are experts at Valving shocks for lm's? for sprints? for midgets? for DIRTcar mods? for A mods? for stock cars? are we talking 50 people total? 200? what is the skill needed to do this? is it a science or is it all just trial & error? does a computer do it and the "expert" just programs the cpu? i dont know what is entailed in "valving"....please do tell if you know. The real job of a shock is to smooth out impulse loads to the suspension. You can model that with wheel rates and damping coefficient. Of course, we use shocks incorrectly in several ways on late models to manipulate aero platform.
All that said, unless you are doing something new with the suspension, the needed damping curves are pretty well defined. You just build what's required and then make sure it dynos correctly.Last edited by MasterSbilt_Racer; 11-11-2025, 05:52 AM.Modern Day Spec Wedge Racing

What Mastersbilt_Racer said is true. I was a shock builder with Carrera 20 years ago, the valving is just selecting the right parts and pieces to create a desired "dampening curve". Back then the computers were less involved than today, but we did use them to some degree. There is no singular "best" curve, especially in dirt track racing because the surface is always evolving and driving style and suspension system play a role too. You can build a general curve that is "good" for most people/chassis, but working with a builder you can refine your package to best suit you or your situation. If you have access to data acquisition or can/want to pay someone to go with you to test you can dial in that much better, but... Chassis designs and setups are always changing so in turn the dampening curves will need refining too. Don't get caught up in fads and brand names. Back in the day we had drivers that wanted very specific things and it was my job to create those things for them if possible. We had a big name asphalt LM guy, I forget his name,(this was before adjustable s became huge so we built specific shocks, but this guy want "ALL" his shocks, for example, regardless of the rest of the curve to be say 60# at 3 in/sec, Around 2000 we were building Cup shocks for qualifying at Talledega that they wanted 1500# of rebound at 1 in/sec, to hold the back of the car down. I've seen a lot of things, many trends, but they come and go. Hope this helps.Originally posted by ftfiowa View Posthow many people are experts at Valving shocks for lm's? for sprints? for midgets? for DIRTcar mods? for A mods? for stock cars? are we talking 50 people total? 200? what is the skill needed to do this? is it a science or is it all just trial & error? does a computer do it and the "expert" just programs the cpu? i dont know what is entailed in "valving"....please do tell if you know. No, Bloomquist had very specific things he wanted when I worked with him briefly in 2000. For a very short time during speed weeks Bloomquist and GVS partnered up and we approached him about working together. He showed us what he wanted and we built them for him, but I think he only ran them 1 or 2 times before he and GVS split and he stayed with what he had. Just like every thing else in DLM the last 30 years, Bloomquist was quick to see the benefits and adopt what worked and discard what was useless. Bloomquist did have at his shop a more rudimentary style pencil dyno, but that data could be replicated on any modern dyno too, if you know how.Originally posted by 84wedge View PostIs it true Bloomquist was winning all that stuff with no regard for shock dynos or anything fancy?"In the Republic of Mediocrity, Genius is Dangerous." - Robert Green Ingersoll
