I think Justin really nailed it with his assessment of the Dome. I call it a yearend Christmas party. It's nice and it's fun, but as far as a race goes...doesn't really interest me. I'm glad it's around because a lot of people really enjoy it and that has to be good for the sport overall. It's just not my thing. It's one event where I'll just wait for the highlights rather than sit through the whole thing.

Great interview with Mike Nuchols. This is a short excerpt on costs of engines for 602, 604, Limiteds vs Supers.

Supers, crates, limiteds... What's REALLY different between dirt late models

What was the Rumley "deck height trickery" he was talking about?

Ok. I found it. He's talking about when they checked static deck height, you could have a huge advantage by your car raising more than other cars on the track. The thing is, the droop rule is kinda the same way, as it doesn't simulate on-track posture. You can change stuff on the rr and affect the droop rule measurement 5" or more.

In the static days, they would have a very high rf ride height and low LR ride height in the pits.

The interview episode this week was pretty informative for those of us that are fans but aren't heavily involved in racing to know the inner workings of the sport.

So the deck height of the car is higher when it's driving than when you jack it up enough to pick the LR up? Is this one of those position dependant shock things?

No. It's a hanging vs rolling thing. Position based shocks can help a little bit here and there, but on the droop measurement, both rear tires are travelling in droop. On the race track, the right side is in compression. So the chassis is rolling with respect to the rear axle. To maximize on track droop vs measurement in the pits, you need to maximize the difference in the angle the axle is positioned vs chassis on track vs the hang measurement in the pits. You can do things to the car to help you during both scenarios (pick the LR up sooner when the rear is raised, but get the LR lower when the rr is compressed.). The front plays into it a little bit too, but the rear makes a big difference.

Guys used to put a chain on the rr to stop it from climbing the bars and it tighten the car a lot in the slick. But, holding that rr up, during the droop measurement, makes you fail big time vs not doing it. That lead to lots of interesting shock solutions and eventually the newer way of doing springs on the rr, that 20rt seemed to find before everyone else

I remember Ricky Weiss failing droop once and blaming it on how fast they jacked the car compressing the RF. Not sure if he was just making excuses for failing tech or if it was a legitimate complaint.

Speaking of Ricky Weiss, is he still stuck in Canada? Is he still building his Sniper Chassis?

After he lost the Kubota sponsorship, he said he was going to try some different things. He did an episode today, which i just finished watching. It seems he is doing more long form interviews and the format he used last year is down to a few times a week. That may just be for the off-season though. Personally, I liked it best when he released the show on a regular schedule and regular time. It's a lot easier to remember to tune in when you see the clock hit 2pm. I've found myself missing episodes because I just forget to check or when I do, there isn't anything new.

It's a great show and I'll watch whatever he puts out, even if it is a few days after release. He does a great job covering Late Models even though I think Sprints are more his thing.
