I found it interesting that red clay with less sand was a first choice. I have seen a lot of tracks in 60 years and the best of the best has been black gumbo tracks, like Knoxvile, Fairbury and I-80. Maybe it's just the preparation.

The track initially sought red clay to offer diversity from the other tracks in close proximity to the Memphis area.
