face bars a good idea? check this out

This is Tony Knowles car after getting struck by this boulder at Rome over the weekend. I remember a few years ago some guys wouldn't have the face bars. I'm glad most chassis builders now days make sure they're there.

Can't say I've ever seen a rock this big come out of a race track.

I've noticed that some of the chassis manufacturers who only had a few bars in front of the driver have gone to bars all the way across in newer designs. It's as good a safety move as I've seen in racing the last few years.

Dang Tony, I'm glad those bars held. (I know you are too.)

It spread the bars and came through to hit him in the chest. Look at the picture better and you will see.

Mike Balzano lost a STARS championship because something came through and broke either his arm or wrist and he couldn't finish the season.
Lynn Geisler (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word) near had his head taken off years back when I think it was a rotor flew in and hit him.
I have been a huge supporter of the window bars and window nets. By seeing that photo it tells me the chassis builders need to make the bars out of heavier stronger material and make them closer together.
The one guy I was helping went above and beyond and installed 1" x 3" wire fencing on his window bars after he was nailed by a large clump of clay. The wire fencing at least slowed it down and broke them into smaller pieces.

Tony Knowles said that this was pulled onto the track by a car who got too close to a bern around the infield, so at least it was not just laying on the racetrack.Clamped,If you are referring to Lynn's incident at tri city in Franklin Pa it was a rock despite what the speedway says. I was watching lynn drive into turn three and saw the thing go in the car and come out.

When rome slicks off it is common for cars to get there LF tires way up on the berm chasing around the inside of the track.

Not running the bars and wire, as well as window nets, is just asking for it. Can't even count the amount of stuff that has gotten into our driver's compartment over the years even with all of those. If you're worried about the weight just skip the double bacon cheeseburger before you race.

I guess it was said in the post shards off of the rock had hit him when it hit, didn't cause any injury though I don't think.

It's been a few years ago Mark Morrison got hit by a rock that he said looked like it was about the size of a baked tater at brushcreek. It busted his helmet and broke his jaw, also knocked out a couple teeth.

Pretty sure the same type deal happen to Jeff Cooke at Charlotte a few years back too. Heard it was a rock or hard piece of dirt, also heard it was a broken brake rotor. I know it messed his face up. People don't really think about this stuff til happens. Very scary.

If I remember correctly, the year Cooke got hit, a bunch of other guys got hit by chunks of clay, too. I believe it was Chub Frank, Tim Fuller and Jeremy Miller. I think there was a couple more even. That was back when they were trying to have races at Charlotte with zero dust, so they overwatered the living sh!t out of it, and it used to just come apart.

Clint did get hit several years ago. I can't remember the year but it was probably 6 or 8 yrs ago. I've ran at Rome a bunch it's only 20 mins down the road. I have seen tons of stuff torn up from rocks at Rome.

I've seen lead go through 2 1.5" 4130cm bars cleanly, AND take out the entire rear deck.
