That is very good question Vineyard4fanTN. You are right, not everyone races against one another. To create a "legit" ranking statistical means must found for many different categories. Once the means are found then a "legitimate" ranking can be created. It takes a little in-depth statistical work, but the rankings are "legit". Good data in and great data analysis are the key.

How can rankings be legit when everybody doesn't race against each other?

Ever look at a college football poll, basketball, baseball??? Heck, even the major Pro sports have power rankings now and not all compete against each other. In fact, I'd be wiling to bet that the top 25 in a DLM poll face each other more than those in a top 25 college football poll just because the number of races available to participate in. There's actually a pretty good cross section to make inferences from in DLM's. vs. college football for example where a voter does alot of score comparisons against similar opponents, can't really do that in DLM's. Wins/top 5's and quality of competition is probably the best way of judging, along with DirtOnDirt recaps. jmo though
