In '89 or '90 at the Turkey Classic at Pearsonville, in the California desert, I was involved in a similar, though not quite as spectacular, incident in the open comp LM main. We started at the back of a 21 car field due to a flat in a qualifier with a wedge bodied car with 15'"& 18" wide tires my boy & I put together for that race. Car was extremely fast and was half way through the field on the first lap coming out of 4 in a dust bowl with, literally, zero visibility and piled wide open into a 9 or 10 car mess. There were cars on top of each other and one car standing on it's tail leaning on the fence. Got to pit road, my son, 13 or 14 at the time, pulled the front tin off and went back out but the front clip and torsion bars were so bent that the throttle was stuck wide open so ran a few laps by just turning the ignition on and off till I decided that wasn't a good idea and parked it. Only went there once a year for several years until they dropped the class. That joint was on my bucket list though it only paid about $600 to win and we never did. Sure looked forward to it though.
