Just heard that South Bend Motor Speedway (SBMS currently asphalt); South Bend, Indiana might be going dirt next year. Anyone know more about this?

Webpage says: "Bring your cameras as there are also some big changes in store for the track during the off season." Only 10 late models at recent show. May be loads of dirt headed that way.

Modifieds or sprints likely to be the headliner class. Reason for the switch is some parts of the asphalt started coming up and the don't have the money to repave it.

That'd be great for our side of the sport no matter what class of cars they run (if actually converted), but I would have guessed it'd cost more in equipment and fuel to maintain a dirt track as compared to asphalt any day (even with repaving).

probably will align with Plymouth Speedway which turned dirt a few short years ago and races on saturday nights while south bend runs on friday

If they don't have the money to repaved it, how in the hell will they afford to convert it to a dirt track. Somethings in life just go beyond comprehension.

Using fill for the dirt track surface instead of clay. It would be cheaper, for sure, but it would just be rocky dirt.

The Guy that owns Plymouth Ed Kennedy (he's loaded $$$$) and possibly the head of the asphalt guy at Hoosier (I won't say his name) are possibly bank rolling them to help get the clay! Not sure on that but have talked to a few folks very close to the situation.
