This is the very reason you don't drink and race afterwards. - Happen last night at Paducah (KY) International Raceway.

I don't think I have ever seen drivers drinking till after their feature anywhere. I really never pay attention to street stocks, bombers, etc. but that surprises me that it's even an issue.
      Go Buckeyes!!!

Sadly, the track will suffer as well as the person injured. Prayers to everyone involved.

          On a somewhat related topic-
I went to the IMCA SuperNationals at Boone last year. Drinking is allowed in the pits during the races. I was absolutely shocked when I found out about that. I had a race driver (he wasn't drinking) offer me a beer in the pits just as racing started for the day. I declined his offer and thought "wft is he doing offering me a beer just as racing starts. Alcohol in the pits is a big no no at every other single race I've been to in my life." I headed to the cat walks soon after to watch the races and saw people drinking beer and than realized it's okay to drink in the pits during racing. Pretty surprising to me that's allowed. Hopefully an accident like that never happens at the Supernats with so many cars and people moving around in very tight spaces.

I only had seen it allowed at bulls gap in tennesee until I went to a WoO sprint race at beaver dam WI and they were selling it in the pits during the races a couple years back.

If you really start digging for the truth you'd probably find it fairly common for some to drink a few or hit some wacky grass before the races start.

Not trying to be funny or make light of the situation in anyway but how big of a coincidence is it that the injured official and county/sheriff's department have the same name.

I've been to over 25 different tracks & they have allowed beer in the pits at all of them I've been to. I've only seen a driver drink twice it was 1 beer, now how many they drank before or after I saw them idon't know. The one was a 4 cylinder driver & he caused a couple cautions & was towed off the track.

We use to run the new Colombia speedway in SC years ago at the drivers meeting they would draw a division out of a hat and the drivers would have to take a breathalyzer.

This is a very true story ; in our area we had a very successful late model pilot in our area that won championships at several tracks and scores of races. We would see the tow rig and trailer parked at a bar along the way from between their house and the track. The driver was always standing by the car with a beer in his hand. He had a quart bottle [glass to boot] that he would take big old swigs out of during yellow flags. One night at a tight little fast bullring he won the race and when he got out of the car in victory lane he was so drunk that he fell on his rear end and had to be helped up to do the interview !! Around 8 years after that he was pulled over in the tow rig for going 72 in a 45 M.P.H. zone on the way to a race and subsequently was issued a D.U.I. ! ! You cant make this stuff up !!!

Previous poster hit the nail on the head, it is way more common than you might think. Not that I am any more credible than others here, but I have raced some and when I wasn't I've helped crew for a lot of guys, both at the track and help in the shop. Especially in small, sleepy, blue collar towns, where it just isn't that uncommon to even see a guy at a red light with a beer in the console. Or them getting out at the pit gate to sign in and the truck is running, window down, beer in the console. Now what I will also say is that it is much more of a problem with the pit crews/wives/families getting their drink on during a race night and then when something happens to their driver on the track, all hell breaks loose. This is also more common in the weekly classes (door bangers and such), where they race the same guys every week, same track, everybody knows everybody, (good chance there are some love triangles in progress), things can escalate quickly.

And don't fool yourself, just because they may not sell beer in the pits some places doesn't mean alcohol isn't being consumed. Don't think there isn't some alcohol tucked away in coolers in those big trucks and trailers. And the truth is, some people may drink all day and you will never know, you just may think they are naturally goofy. It is very hard for a small, local track to have the personnel to keep an eye on this. Just not enough people on staff to police it at most places.
