We flew back to winter and reality last night from The Sunshine State where we had some of the best weather we can remember in the 30+ years we've been going to Florida for Speedweeks. Loved it the whole time and wish we were still there. Oh well, maybe someday!
The debut of the POWRi National Midgets in the Florida Speedweeks mix at Bubba Raceway Park was somewhat more auspicious than we thought it would be. Car count was in the low 20's (they lost a couple of cars on the first night due to crash damage) which actually surprised us since the POWRi guys seem to stick close to home. There were several USAC Midget regulars there and that was expected. Also not surprising was Kevin Thomas Jr.'s dominance in winning both nights A-main. We expected former Belleville Nationals Champion, Chad Boat along with Tanner Thorson and Ryan Robinson to be a bit more of a challenge to KTJ but that wasn't to be. Good racing from 2nd on back in the A-mains on both nights, but no one had anything for KTJ.
Took in 2 nights of the big block modified's and dirt late models at Volusia on Tuesday and Wednesday and as usual the racing was superb at VSP. I've read where the late model racing at East Bay this year was as good as it gets. First time we've completely missed going to EB. Sounds like we should have found a way to get there.
The USAC National 410 wingless Sprint Cars at BRP were superb, as usual. There were over 30 cars on hand on Thursday night and we couldn't have been more satisfied with the racing. And again, the weather was beautiful all three nights. This 3 night series has become a very significant early season event. I've only missed one of the nine USAC Sprint Car Winter Dirt Games at BRP and don't remember a snoozer. "Sunshine" Tyler Courtney, who won both Friday and Saturday night A-main's at BRP, looks like he's going to be a huge force to be reckoned with all season. We're happy for Sunshine, he's a nice kid with whom we had the pleasure of spending some time with out at the 2017 Belleville Nationals. Good kid.
The only downer at the midget and sprint car shows at BRP was the nasty tumble, and subsequent hospital time, that Tyler Clem sustained during the 1st heat race on Friday night. Tyler is just 15 years old and was doing a great job up till the flip. He just seemed to hook a rut and bicycle. The hospital released Tyler on Saturday afternoon and he watched the final night PPV from home. I hope this young fellow gets back in a wingless sprinter very soon because it was clearly evident he has skills.
Got down to the Keys for a couple of days after the racing ended at BRP on Saturday night. There are parts of the Florida Keys that are still a real mess from the hurricane but it looks like they'll have most everything back to relative normality soon. The Florida Keys are great, we love them more every time we go down there.
All in all a great trip which was greatly enhanced by the T-shirt weather virtually every day we were down there. Already looking forward to 2019!!!
