ARCA, USAC, & Monster Trucks Set For Final Three Days Of Du Quoin State Fair (Du Quoin, IL) The final three days of the Du Quoin State Fair, in Du Quoin, IL, will be a little different this year but in a good way. First off, the ARCA Menards Series will be running under the lights on a Saturday night for the first time in race history. Secondly, USAC will be coming to town to run under the lights on Sunday night. And last, but not least, Monster Truck Monday has been added to this year’s fair with a pair of shows on Labor Day Monday. The three events are promotions of Track Enterprises. The racing weekend all begins on Saturday night, August 31, with the ARCA Menards Series in the running of the Southern Illinois 100 presented by Federated Car Care. In addition to the 100 lap event for ARCA, the DIRTcar Modifieds will be in action for the first of two nights, running their practice/qualifying and heat races. On Sunday, September 1, the open wheelers of the USAC Silver Crown Series come to town for the Ted Horn 100. The Silver Crown cars have put on some stellar shows at the Magic Mile over the years and are coming off of last year’s event which saw the track widen out for some great racing. The Sunday night festivities will include the DIRTcar Modifieds running in the 26th edition of the Bill Oldani Memorial, paying $2,000 to the winner. New to the fair this year will be the Monster Truck Monday, also promoted by Track Enterprises. The trucks will have two shows, an afternoon matinee at 1:00 PM and an evening show at 6:00 PM. There will be pre-event pit parties beginning two hours before each show, featuring autographs and “Punisher The Ride Truck”. On Saturday, August 31, pit gates will open at 10:30 AM, grandstands at 1:00 PM, hotlaps begin at 2:30, ARCA qualifying is at 5:30, Modified heats start at 6:30, and the ARCA Southern Illinois 100 presented by Federated Car Care is at 8:05. On Sunday, September 1, pit gates open at 1:00 PM with grandstands at 4:00, hotlaps at 5:00, USAC qualifying at 6:30, Modified feature racing at 7:15, and the Ted Horn 100 for USAC is scheduled to take the green at 8:15. Monster Truck Monday, September 2, will have grandstands opening and the pit party beginning at 11:00 AM for the first show with a 1:00 start time. For the evening show, grandstands and the pit party time is 4:00 PM, while action begins at 6:00. TED HORN 100 BRINGS MAGIC TO THE Du QUOIN MILE SUNDAY By: Richie Murray – USAC Media Du Quoin, Illinois (August 26, 2019)………The Du Quoin State Fairgrounds have been a staple on the AAA and USAC Championship Car racing trail since 1948.* Seven decades later, the spectacular sight of a full field of USAC Silver Crown cars rumbling down the front stretch of the one-mile dirt oval in southern Illinois sends a chill down the spine. The chill, and the roar, returns this Sunday night, September 1, with the Ted Horn 100, honoring the late, great three-time AAA National Champion, National Sprint Car Hall of Famer and 1947 Indianapolis 500 pole winner who finished in the top-four at the Brickyard in nine consecutive races between 1936 and 1948.* He lost his life in the peak of his career in a racing accident at Du Quoin in October of 1948 at the age of 38. Horn’s legacy remains today as the namesake of the grand event where two-time race winner Chris Windom led only six laps in the 2018 edition, preserving his machinery down the stretch to win and complete the sweep of both Illinois dirt miles after winning at Springfield just weeks before.* The Canton, Ill. driver won his first at Du Quoin in 2016 en route to the series title. 71st Horn 100 Marks Du Quoin Swan Song for USAC Owner Hardy By Jay Hardin (Track Enterprises Staff) Du Quoin, IL (August 26, 2019)-All good things eventually come to an end, one of the better things in USAC history has been the entry of Decatur, Illinois’ Dave Hardy. Hardy is one of the few entrants in the sport who can say he has been behind the efforts of a USAC Stock Car and a USAC Silver Crown championship dirt car. The 71st Ted Horn 100 at Du Quoin will be somewhat bittersweet for the central Illinois car owner as he has decided to retire at season’s end after 64 years of race car ownership. The two-time winning car owner of the Ted Horn 100 will be sorely missed by competitors, officials and fans. Forsyth’s Butch Garner was part of a standout USAC Stock Car rookie class in 1974 joining fellow central Illinois drivers Ken Rowley and Steve Drake on the USAC tour. With Hardy as part of the behind the scenes effort the team and driver quickly became one of the favorites on the dirt miles including the “Magic Mile” at Du Quoin. Garner made 17 starts at Du Quoin and came close to winning in 1982 and again in 1983, with the last start coming in 1998. Hardy entered USAC competition again in 2011 combining with his two sons to form Hardy Boys Racing. The team bought a Stealth chassis from Tim and “Papa Jim” Siner and placed second generation driver Shane (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum of Benton, Illinois at the wheel. (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum, the son of Midwest legend Cliff (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum, finished 18th in his first mile track start, the 2011 Hoosier Hundred. Placings of 17th at Springfield and Du Quoin followed as the team and driver continued to gain experience on the USAC tour. The Hardy team purchased a Beast chassis for the 2012 and a second for the 2013 season. The upgrade in equipment saw (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum finish 21st at Indianapolis, 5th at Springfield and 4th at Du Quoin during 2013. It was during the Du Quoin race that (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum may have briefly led (though not for a full lap) before fuel issues slowed him at the finish. However, it was apparent that the Hardy Boys and their driver were on the verge of something special. Partnering with Marion’s Shane Wade and using the number 66 made famous by southern Illinois native Chuck Amati, the team started 3rd at Indianapolis and 6th at Springfield without a top ten result in either race. The 2014 Ted Horn 100 offered redemption and the Hardy team got it with (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum leading 41 of the 100 miles and capturing a very popular victory, the first ever in the Ted Horn 100 for a driver from southern Illinois. The team also revived the tradition of jumping into the infield lake after victory. Hardy made another investment over the winter, acquiring a newer Maxim chassis named Mary Ann, with the Du Quoin winning car named Ginger. He team ran both cars at Indianapolis with rookie Casey Shuman running near the front with Ginger until dropping out and (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum taking Mary Ann to 6th. The newer Hardy machine led 40 of the first 50 miles at Springfield before dropping back to 8th. Mid-summer the team won its second USAC Silver Crown race taking the Sumar Classic at Terre Haute. Coming into the 2015 Ted Horn 100 the team was a favorite to enter victory lane and did just that, leading the final 38 miles and once again heading for the lake. The team added a pavement car at one time, however in the last couple of seasons Hardy has reduced the schedule concentrating on the dirt miles and Terre Haute on the USAC schedule. The Hardy legacy at Du Quoin is one of success, in seven starts the team has 2 wins, 6 top 5 finishes, 5 top 10 starts and led 74 laps. Greg Hardy has been instrumental in promoting the series on social media creating a USAC Silver Crown Facebook page that has over 13,000 members. The team planned to run the two dirt miles on the schedule and those plans will be in a different order with the Bettenhausen 100 at Springfield postponed until September 22. THORSON TABBED FOR DYSON’S RIDE AT Du QUOIN By: Richie Murray – USAC Media Du Quoin, Illinois (August 28, 2019)………Tanner Thorson, the 2016 USAC NOS Energy Drink National Midget champion, has been named the driver of the Chris Dyson Racing No. 9 for this Sunday’s USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series Ted Horn 100 at the Du Quoin (Ill.) State Fairgrounds on September 1. Thorson has made just one career start in his Silver Crown career, back in 2015 at Eldora Speedway’s 4-Crown Nationals. The drive came in a last-minute substitute role for Michael Dutcher Motorsports, starting 19th and finishing 17th. Thorson does have previous experience at the one-mile dirt oval in Du Quoin, starting 3rd and finishing 17th in ARCA Stock Car start in 2017. Dyson’s car has appeared in four Silver Crown events this season, all with team owner and driver Chris Dyson behind the wheel. Dyson finished a best of 9th in the opener on the pavement at Memphis in March. He was also 19th on the dirt mile at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in May after riding out a wild turn two accident late in the 100-miler. One year ago at Du Quoin, the CDR No. 9 charged from 26th to 13th with Dyson in the seat. Dyson, a two time American Le Mans Series titlist who sits second in the Trans Am Series standings with two victories, is unable to compete at Du Quoin due to a racing conflict. Dyson maintains his support of the USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series by entering his car in as many races as possible this season even when not driving himself. Thorson, of Minden, Nev., has made his name with USAC in the midget division where he owns 13 career NOS Energy Drink National Midget feature wins including the Turkey Night Grand Prix in 2015 and the Gold Crown Nationals in back-to-back years in 2015-16. The latest of his USAC Midget victories came in spectacular fashion this past June during Indiana Midget Week at Lincoln Park Speedway where he charged from 15th to 1st to grab the win. The triumph came just three months following a serious multi-car highway accident in California that left him with a broken left arm and right foot, a cracked sternum, broken ribs and a punctured lung. TED HORN 100 ENTRY LIST REVEALED By: Richie Murray – USAC Media Du Quoin, Illinois (August 28, 2019)………Eight past Ted Horn 100 winners are among the 37 drivers prepared for action in this Sunday’s USAC Silver Crown Champ Car Series race at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds in southern Illinois. Chris Windom (Canton, Ill.) has captured two of the last three Ted Horn 100 victories, both of which he assumed the lead late in the race, just six laps from the end in 2018 and with three to go during the 2016 classic en route to a championship season. USAC Silver Crown point leader Kody Swanson (Kingsburg, Calif.) owns a pair of Ted Horn 100 victories. He took the first of his record 28 series wins at Du Quoin in 2010 and raced to victory again in 2017. His team, Nolen Racing, has collected two Du Quoin victories, first with Johnny Parsons in 1992 and in 1999 with Tony Elliott. He will wheel the Galas Motorsports No. 12, which has direct connections to Delrose/Holt Racing’s six Silver Crown victories at Du Quoin with drivers Gary Bettenhausen and Jeff Swindell. Swindell (Germantown, Tenn.) won for Delrose/Holt in the 1990 race at Du Quoin. Nearly three decades later, he remains a threat to win. In both 2016 and 2017, Swindell led the most laps. He was in control for 55 laps in 2016, finishing 2nd after being passed for the lead with just three laps to go. In 2017, he led 68, finishing 3rd after leading until 10 laps remaining. The very first of Peru, Indiana native Russ Gamester’s six Silver Crown wins came at Du Quoin in 1997 where the 1989 USAC National Midget champion took over the lead with just 14 laps remaining to score the breakthrough victory. Shane Cottle (Kansas, Ill.) was dominant in his 2007 Du Quoin victory, leading all 100 laps from the pole position en route to his first career series victory. He again won the pole for the event the following year in 2008. Past Silver Crown Series winners on the hunt for a first Du Quoin triumph include C.J. Leary (Greenfield, Ind.), who has led the race in each of the past two years, including a race-high 53 laps one year ago. He’s joined by David Byrne (Shullsburg, Wisc.), John Heydenreich (Bloomsburg, Pa.), 2017 Springfield Mile winner Justin Grant (Ione, Calif.), May’s Hoosier Hundred winner Tyler Courtney (Indianapolis, Ind.) and two-time Springfield winner A.J. Six-time All Star Circuit of Champions titlist Chad Kemenah (Alvada, Ohio) is ready to make his Du Quoin debut. Jacob Wilson (Crawfordsville, Ind.) won the pole for last year’s race while Kevin Thomas, Jr. (Cullman, Ala.) took the runner-up spot in the main event behind Windom and brings a streak of four-straight 2nd place finishes on dirt in Silver Crown competition into Du Quoin. They are joined by fellow Silver Crown veterans Kyle Steffens (St. Louis, Mo.), Kyle Robbins (New Castle, Ind.), Austin Nemire (Sylvania, Ohio), Mike Haggenbottom (Levittown, Pa.), Matt Goodnight (Winchester, Ind.), Danny Long (Bonne Terre, Mo.), Steve Buckwalter (Royersford, Pa.), Casey Shuman (Tempe, Ariz.) and Chris Fetter (Troy, Mo.). “Sunshine” Looking for DuQuoin Redemption By Jay Hardin Track Enterprises Staff DuQuoin, IL-(August 29, 2019)-There are times race fans may have heard a driver remark “this place owes me one” but the sentiment is often hard to justify. The young pilot who is arguably the hottest driver in United States Auto Club competition at the present time might just feel that way about the two dirt miles in the state of Illinois given the 2018 results. Tyler “Sunshine” Courtney of Indianapolis looked like a winner during the races at Springfield and DuQuoin last year but could not find victory lane. He returns this year with a shot at victories on both tracks and a chance to be the final driver to register a historic “triple crown”. Courtney is a threat to win in all three of USAC’s prime divisions, the Midget series, Sprint Car series and the Silver Crown division. Courtney ran his first race in the big cars a few seasons ago taking over a seat occupied by veteran Tom Capie, eventually moving to a car owned by long time midget car owner Hans Lein of Wisconsin. Courtney and Lein have formed a winning combination, Courtney won his first Silver Crown race in September of 2017 at Eldora and led both at Springfield and DuQuoin in the black machine. The race at DuQuoin may have been the most heartbreaking as Courtney took over the lead from C.J. Leary with 13 miles to go after Leary began to run short on fuel. The same fate befell Courtney within 7 laps as his engine began to sputter and he was forced to the pits on lap 96. Courtney comes back to the Magic Mile as one of the favorites to win the 71st Ted Horn 100 and a shot at becoming perhaps the last driver on a very exclusive list. Since 1953 just 14 drivers have won 100-mile championship races on the three Midwestern fairground mile race tracks, Indianapolis, Springfield and DuQuoin. With the announcement earlier that the Indiana State Fair was turning the “Track of Champions” into a practice facility for horses, it is possible that no one will be able to claim a victory on all three again. Further, just four men, Jimmy Bryan, A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Jack Hewitt won all three (Bettenhausen (Springfield) 100, Ted Horn 100, Hoosier Hundred) in the same year. Courtney won this year’s Hoosier Hundred at the Indiana State Fairgrounds in the same fashion as Chris Windom did at Springfield and DuQuoin in 2018. Courtney started 3rd and bided his time taking the lead from Kevin Thomas Jr. with less than 10 miles to go. His quest for the USAC Silver Crown “triple crown” continues Sunday night in the 71st Ted Horn 100. Practice for the big cars begins at 5 p.m. with the 100-miler beginning around 8.
