August 25, 2025-DuQuoin, IL-Two-time Ted Horn 100 winner Shane (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum was beside himself after the Hans Lein Parts for sale Silver Crown championship car was hauled away on a hook during practice for the August 16 Bettenhausen 100 at Springfield. (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum had entered turn one at speed when the front end washed out and the car slid into the outside concrete and a series of flips ensued.




Fortunately, the “Chief” wasn’t hurt but the car, a potential winner, was done for the day. (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum and the Lein team will be one of the contenders in the upcoming Ted Horn 100 at DuQuoin, joined on the team by veteran Ken Schrader.




(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum lives in Franklin County, Illinois where he is the chief of the local fire department and about 15 minutes from the Magic Mile in the middle of the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds. His father Cliff (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum was a legend in supermodified and sprint car competition throughout the Midwest. Shane followed suit climbing behind the wheel and ran his first race on the Magic Mile in 1998 as part of the UMP Modiifed Bill Oldani Memorial. Shane, however, had bigger things on his mind.




After running various cars, he paired with Decatur car owner Dave Hardy and ran his first Ted Horn 100 champ car race in 2011 finishing 17th completing 89 miles. A newer car in 2013 put him in the lead late in the going but a lack of fuel relegated him to fourth at the end. But there was a light of hope that (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum could break into DuQuoin’s victory lane.




The next year the Chief led 41 miles and the wild victory lane celebration led the driver and crew to jump in DuQuoin’s infield lake. In 2015 it was a repeat win, again starting 5th and crossing the finish line first. Overall, the two-time DuQuoin winner has 11 Ted Horn starts, leading 3 times for a total of 149 laps and completing 1082 of a possible 1100 miles.




Schrader ran his first one-mile dirt event at DuQuoin in August of 1979 in a USAC Stock Car. Schrader has seven Ted Horn 100 starts, the first in 1981 and the last in 2021. His best finish was a third in 1983 leading 9 laps.




It’s all part of a huge weekend of racing in Southern Illinois that opens on Saturday afternoon, August 30 for the Ted Horn 100 for the USAC Silver Crown Series. Then, Sunday night, August 31, the ARCA Menards Series returns for the Southern Illinois 100 for an evening under the lights. The DIRTcar Modifieds will race both days with prelims Saturday and the feature Sunday night.

USAC Contenders Emerge at Springfield, Head for DuQuoin

August 25, 2025-DuQuoin, IL-The August 16 Bettenhausen 100 at Springfield, run in high heat and humidity, saw several contenders for victory emerge in the USAC Silver Crown Series event. The Bettenhausen was the first of two traditional one-mile dirt track races on the schedule. The second and final mile race is also a daytime event on Saturday, August 30 when the Ted Horn 100 is contested at the DuQuoin State Fairgrounds. The Springfield race saw several potential first-time winners on the Illinois mile.

While Kody Swanson captured his fourth Bettenhausen and 49th Silver Crown race overall, it wasn’t without competition. Ohio’s Matt Westfall led the first few laps in the brutal heat, then dropped back and for the most part kept pace with the race leader. Westfall finished second and held onto third in the Silver Crown point standings. Westfall comes to DuQuoin with six starts in the Ted Horn 100 and a best finish of tenth in 2022.

Pennsylvania’s Carmen Perigo burst onto the Silver Crown scene in 2020 making two starts. At Springfield two weeks ago, the 54-year old shocked everyone when he came from 8th starting spot and passed Swanson on the outside going into the third turn on lap 34. Perigo pulled away from the 8-time Silver Crown champ but near halfway he appeared to be slowing. On lap 59, Swanson repassed him and Perigo dropped back to 8th at the finish. Perigo has one start at DuQuoin, coming from 22nd to 11th in 2021.

Chatham, Illinois Mario Clouser got the ride ordinarily held by Silver Crwon champ and Ted Horn 100 winner Logan Seavey and had a strong run. In just his second start at Springfield, Clouser qualified fourth and finished a strong third. Mario has two Ted Horn 100 starts, with an 18th in 2023 and a 6th in 2024.

Indiana’s Chase Stockon is a winner on sprint car tracks but is still seeking his first win on one of the big miles. His Indiana based team continues to improve and at Springfield Stockon qualified fifth and ended the day with a fine seventh place run. Stockon finished thirteenth in his first Ted Horn 100 last year.

Veterans to watch on Saturday include Brian Tyler, a two-time (2008, 2021) Ted Horn 100 winner, came from 26th to 6th at Springfield. Pennsylvania’s Jimmy Light had one of his best runs at Springfield, qualifying third and getting a top ten. Two-time Bettenhausen 100 winner A.J. Fike returned to the series in his own equipment and ran just outside the top ten.

Du Quoin, IL – Racing legend Ken Schrader returns to his dirt roots this weekend in southern Illinois, competing in both USAC Racing Silver Crown and DIRTcar Racing Modified events at the historic Magic Mile during the Du Quoin State Fair Racing Weekend.

Schrader, a 1982 USAC Silver Crown Series champion, 1983 USAC Sprint Car champion, and the 1985 NASCAR Cup Series Rookie of the Year, brings a stellar resume to the mile oval. In his NASCAR career, he logged 763 starts, earned 4 Cup Series victories, 23 poles, 184 top 10s, and finished top 5 in the Cup standings three times. Du Quoin, Illinois (August 27, 2025)………Four past Ted Horn 100 winners across four different decades are among the 30 USAC Silver Crown entries set to compete in this Saturday’s August 30th 71st running of the event at the Du Quoin State Fairgrounds in southern Illinois.



4 PAST WINNERS

Among the four past Du Quoin winners in the field are Justin Grant who was won each of the past two Ted Horn 100s on the one-mile dirt oval in both 2023 and 2024 and is coming in fresh off a USAC AMSOIL National Sprint Car Smackdown victory last Saturday at Indiana’s Kokomo Speedway.

Grant is also the Silver Crown point leader by 77 markers over C.J. Leary. Grant could clinch the 2025 Silver Crown title this Saturday if he finishes the Du Quoin event 77 or more points ahead of C.J. Leary. The maximum points available in a single event Silver Crown event is 76.

Grant is joined by fellow two-time Du Quoin winners, Michigan’s Brian Tyler (2008 & 2021) as well as local favorite Shane (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum (2014 & 2015) from Benton, Illinois. Peru, Indiana’s Russ Gamester returns for his 25th Du Quoin start after winning the event in 1997.



CLOSE ENCOUNTERS OF THE Du QUOIN KIND

Kevin Thomas Jr. will make his USAC Silver Crown season debut this Saturday at Du Quoin. He’ll be driving the same John Haggenbottom owned car that just won on the other Illinois dirt mile at Springfield two weeks earlier with Kody Swanson at the wheel.

Swanson will be competing in a Must See Racing Xtreme Sprint Car Series event in Owosso, Michigan this weekend and will not compete at Du Quoin.

Thomas, who finished 2nd at Du Quoin in 2018, will be joined by fellow runner-up C.J. Leary who took 2nd in 2023. A.J. Fike finished 3rd in 2013 while veteran Ken Schrader, the 1982 USAC Silver Crown champion, is back for his first series start of the season in a second Hans Lein owned ride alongside teammate Shane (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum. Schrader finished a best of 3rd with the USAC Champ Cars at Du Quoin in 1983.

Jake Swanson also took 3rd at Du Quoin in 2021 as did Briggs Danner in 2024, while Casey Buckman finished a career best 5th back in 2022.



EYING MAGIC ON THE MILE

Mario Clouser is back in the seat of the Rice Motorsports-Abacus Racing No. 22 machine, which won the 2022 Du Quoin event with Logan Seavey driving. Clouser finished 6th at the race in 2024, and just recently ran 3rd at Springfield two weeks ago.

Kyle Steffens, who is the youngest winner on the Du Quoin Mile in a modified at the age of 16 in 2001, is now a veteran wheelman who finished a best of 7th with the Silver Crown series in 2024. Kyle Robbins took 8th in 2021 while Matt Westfall finished with a 10th at Du Quoin in 2022. Westfall took 2nd on the Springfield Mile earlier this month.



Du QUOIN VETS IN THE FIELD

All but six of the 30 drivers entered have previously started a Du Quoin USAC Silver Crown main event.

Among the veteran group are Korey Weyant (11th in 2024), Jimmy Light (12th in 2019), Chase Stockon (12th in 2022), Kip Hughes (14th in 2024), Dave Berkheimer (15th in 2023), Mitchel Moles (15th in 2024), Saban Bibent (18th in 2024), Danny Jennnigs (20th in 2024) and Kenny Gentry (26th in 2015).



FIRST TED TALK

Driver seeking their first career Ted Horn 100 starts this Saturday at Du Quoin include Aric Gentry, whose uncle, Leon Gentry, finished 13th in the 1986 race. Travis Mahoney will make his Du Quoin debut after his father, Jim Mahoney, made four Du Quoin starts between 1988-1992, finishing a best of 5th in 1989.

Will Armitage will be back in the seat after getting upside down early in the race at Springfield in mid-August, while Tom Savage, Rob Caho Jr. and Tim Kent will all get their first taste of action at Du Quoin.



RACE DETAILS:

The 71st running of the Ted Horn 100 features the USAC Silver Crown National Championship along with the 31st Annual Bill Oldani Memorial Prelims for DIRTcar Modifieds.

Registration and pit gates open at 7am Central. Grandstands and ticket office open at 9am with the drivers meeting set for 9:30am. USAC Silver Crown practice is slated to run from 10-11:10am. USAC Silver Crown qualifying is scheduled for 11:30am followed by DIRTcar Modified hot laps and qualifying at 12:15pm. DIRTcar Modified heats are on tap at 1pm followed by the USAC Ted Horn 100 feature at 1:30pm.

The Ted Horn 100 is one of the oldest and most prestigious events on the entire USAC Silver Crown schedule all year.

The DIRTCar Modifieds will run their heat race events for the 31st Bill Oldani Memorial as part of a great day of racing on a splendid afternoon.

The Magic Mile will shine bright under the lights for a Sunday night racing showcase!

The ARCA Menards Series will take to the dirt for the 2nd and final time this season for the Southern Illinois 100. A great mix of veteran talent with some young and upcoming superstars promises a fantastic 100-lap event

The DIRTCar Modifieds will run the 31st Bill Oldani Memorial championship event after completing their qualifying and heat race events yesterday. Two of the heavy favorites in Treb Jacoby, who broke the track record in qualifying and is a former winner, as well as 8-time Oldani winner Ken Schrader, scored the heat wins. A great field of cars was on hand yesterday, and will put on a great show before the ARCA 100-mile spectacular.
