Dannerโ€™s Springfield Win Could Lead to Du Quoin Glory
        August 26, 2026

(Du Quoin, IL) Briggs Dannerโ€™s win in the Bettenhausen 100 at Springfield on August 22 was his third USAC Silver Crown victory, but his first on one of the historic mile dirt tracks. It was also the first mile-track victory for the Mickey Meyer team. Danner now looks to get out the broom for an Illinois sweep in the September 5 Ted Horn 100 at Du Quoin, the second of two 100-mile dirt races on the Silver Crown schedule.

Twenty-three times since 1948, the winner of the championship car race at the Illinois State Fairgrounds has gone on to win the Ted Horn 100 at Du Quoin. The last driver to do so was Justin Grant in 2024. The list of drivers to double up includes a number of Hall of Fame legends. Tony and Gary Bettenhausen, A.J. Foyt, Mario Andretti, Al Unser, J.J. Yeley and Brian Tyler are just some of the drivers who have won Springfield and Du Quoin in the same year. Jack Hewitt and Chuck Gurney are the only two to accomplish the feat three times, Hewitt in 1986, โ€™87 and โ€™93 and Gurney in 1989, โ€™94 and โ€™96.

Dannerโ€™s win at Springfield was a demonstration of consistency and survival. Briggs qualified second behind two-time Bettenhausen 100 winner Justin Grant and dogged Grant from the second position for 87 miles. Danner survived two failed starts, which included red flags for flipping cars, as well as four caution flags. The third caution came out for leader Grant, as smoke began emanating from the Hemelgarn-NOS Energy-Super Fitness No. 91 entering turn one before the car finally stopped on the backstretch.

Danner led Jake Swanson and veteran Jerry Coons Jr. for the remaining miles as the race ended four laps early with a red flag for Danny Jennings on lap 96. Time constraints meant the checkered flag came out as well, giving Danner his first Bettenhausen 100 trophy. While the entry list for Du Quoin is still pending, it is expected that several past winners may have a say in the outcome of the Ted Horn 100 on September 5.

Two-time Ted Horn 100 winner Justin Grant, who won in 2023 and 2024, looked like the man to beat at Springfield until his engine expired. Two-time Du Quoin winner Brian Tyler, victorious in 2008 and 2021, charged from 21st to fifth at Springfield before his engine also let go. Defending Ted Horn 100 winner C.J. Leary posted a strong finish at the Illinois State Fairgrounds to extend his Silver Crown point lead. Benton, Illinois native Shane (not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)(not a nice word)rum is another local favorite and two-time Ted Horn 100 winner. Meanwhile, 1997 winner Russ Gamester ranks third all-time in Ted Horn 100 starts with 25, trailing only George Snider and Johnny Parsons.

The USAC Silver Crown Ted Horn 100 is set for Saturday, September 5, with the ARCA Menards Series Audubon Park 100 following on Sunday, September 6. Advance discount tickets for each day are available for $5 off the race-day price by calling Track Enterprises at 217-764-3200 or by purchasing them at the Du Quoin State Fair Box Office.
