both are powdered metal but new style are designed much more like a I beam rod where the old style is just a rounded beam rod

new style rods are much more durable but they are heavier

do not mix old style and new style rods

does the old style have a higher failure rate than the new?

It's been so long since we used the old style----I do not think I can answer that accurately
personally I have much more confidence in the new style
