Which Joe Gibbs oil for a 604 and who has the best price to buy it?

You will get various answers to that question depending on who you ask.

We at Race-1 use exclusively Joe Gibbs oil and our recomendation after the break-in procedure is to run a mixture of xp3 and xp6 ---creating a 10/40 version

Gibbs engineers have noticed this and are offering a full synthetic 10/40 for 2012 ---I believe it will be labeled xp9

xp7 is a 10/40 semi sythetic oil that they have had for some time now and is recommended by us for the engine following the BR break in oils but after a few races on that we prefer the full synthetic

You are correct Brad, the new Gibbs oil you are talking about is XP9 and it's a fully synthetic oil.

Hey Chris, this is Kelly. I work at Joe Gibbs so I was checking the going price to see if my price was any better. When I raced before I got the oil for free but they dont do that anymore and I couldnt remember which oil we used.

Tell Lake Jr he better hook you up, lol! Steve Hendren can vouche for how good the inside of our 602 looked after running 1927 green flag laps. The bearings looked so good, Craig was putting them on the work table in order because he thought we were going to re-use them! Cylinder bore showed very, very little to no wear and the nose of the cam showed no wear. You may want to consider the XP9 that just came out.

I talked to Lake jr. and he said to use the xp3 on rebuilt motors and xp1 on new stock motors.

I have spoken with Lake as well and his recommendation is based on bearing clearance and oil temperatures


We throw a little more in the equation plus "admittedly"-- I am still a little old school and prefer heavier oils

I wouldn't put the XP1 in a brand new engine because you have no clue what the clearances are where you or your engine builder would know on a rebuilt engine. Not to mention the fact that the lifters straight from GM are known to bleed down and the thinner the oil, the easier they will bleed down.

I've always used 5 Qts XP1 mixed with 2 qts of XP3 in my 602's and have never had a problem.

i bought a new hendren, they have me using joe gibbs xp1 have about 40 nights on it and have had no problems. change oil every 6 nights
