What shoud it cost to have a 602 legal rebuild done?

It's not really cost effective to rebuild these engines because of the cost of the normal consumable parts used in a rebuild.
Gaskets---70
Rings---350
timing chain &gears--150
valves-----250
springs ---40
keepers --15
retainers--40
valve seals--30
Aftermarket Bearings--50 (allowed by most series)
and if it needs pistons they are $84 EACH
That's a $1000 in parts if the pistons---rockers---push rods---crankshaft--oil pump are in useable condition----alot of ifs and still no labor
so you see it makes rebuilding a 602 less than cost effective
We have been trying to get GM to invent a rebuild kit for the 602 to lower the cost of a rebuild but until that happens it really isn't worth it.

I don't see GM ever doing that. They are not in the business of supplying rebuilders of these engines. The want to sell new crate engines. I think the $84 pistons is proof enough that they are trying to discourage rebuilding these motors. If the supported rebuilding, those pistons would cost about $125 a set. They are nothing special. It cost me $2250 to have one rebuilt, and the builder sponsored the rest of the build cost. Thankfully I was able to buy the core motor cheap.
There's horsepower in a good legal rebuild, but you're going to pay for it.Comment
