    602 lm

I am just starting to think about switching my LM over to a crate. They are getting more common around here. It seems everyone runs a 604. Is it possible for a 602 to compete with a 604 if all things on the car are equal? I am not sure the weight break is worth it. Since I have never ran a crate lm, I am looking to your expertise. Thank you everyone.

We are in the same boat. We are going 602 and most of the top guys run a 604. We are having trouble getting down to the minimum weight of 2250.

Unless your getting the 602 for free, it's not worth it.
We ran our first year with a 602 and there is no way to get the car to min-weight with the right percentages without spending an absolute pile of money on super trick lightweight parts.
I bought the car used and it had EVERYTHING lightweight you could buy. (Magnesium trans and bell, mag rear end, ultra thin deck, hell even the zeus buttons we're cut in half for weight reduction.)
Even with all this the car was 30lbs over-weight and I'm a 200LB driver. That was with zero lead ballast in the car.

We put a 604 in the next year and never looked back.

          2250 with a 602
          2400 with a 604

I figured that a 604 is the way to go from what I see from what everyone is running. Thank you to all of you that have insight into this.

shorter a track the better 602 will run against a 604,..any thing over a 3/8s the 604 will out power the 602,..at 2250 you wont have no extra weight for set up that the 604 enjoys,..an 604 is 40-50lbs lighter than 602 all high an in front of engine plate hurts alot too...an with 602 setup means so much more! momentum threw the turns has to be achieved to be competitive against 604...good luck...

we switched to a 602 this year, we are allowed to run the 12" spoiler. since we were able to get down to the 602 weight, we are afraid we wont be able to get enough of rear % at static. as that is where alot of the extra weight was lost. dont know the exact numbers as i wont have it on the scales until this weekend when we get the new fuel cell in, filled with fuel and spoiler put on.

question is, does the 12" spoiler help enough to get downforce at racing speeds to make up for the lack of static rear %? or should i hang some lead?

We used to run a 602 and like everyone else has said, it is very difficult to get your percentages where you'll want them without putting so much lead on the car that you're way over weight and not taking advantage of the weight break. The only reason we got away with it is because it was in an inch and three quarter car and our driver is 170 soaking wet.
The 602 weights 59 pounds more than the 604 out of the box. If you've got a 2 inch car and a driver over 180, you can forget about getting 54% rear at 2250 total weight.
The other factor (and the engine builders on here will vouch for this) is that the 602 is basically a throw away motor. It cost almost as much to rebuild one as it does to just buy a new one. The 604 is more expensive but you'll get more mileage out of it in the long run. And the 50HP power difference is very noticeable when you are already at such low power to begin with. It's a roughly a 15% increase in power.
