i was wondering your honest opinion in the differences in the older and newer 602 crates.is there a difference in power?reliability?pros/cons?the reason i ask is i can buy a new, "old"crate still in the packaging for a very good price.thank you for your info.it is much appreciated.

I was trying to scan the page in the GM tech manual that described what the change was exactly and why it had to be made but its not working for some reason.
anyway ----the piston is lighter and has a antiscuff coating on the skirt----the older piston and pin weigh 742 grams and the new style combined weight is 671 grams----this led to a crankshaft redesign as well to compensate for balance------all in all I am not sure that the whole thing adds up to any real useable difference ----yes lighter is better but did it really make more performance?
GM says no-----I would have to test equal engines to give you an exact answer and by that i mean a new old and a new new at the same time -----we have dynoed both with very similar readings but to do a real apples to apples test all things need to be as equal as possible
I would say that if the engine you are considering is brand NEW and is 3 to 400 less than a new one at $3149 then buy it and use the money you save to by a new set of tires

I put in a new "OLD" style motor last year. (I got it for winning my first championship in 2006...) anyway, I have had it sitting in the shop for four years, and put it in when everyone else was buying the "NEW" motors... I went out and won the most races and another championship with it... If I had my "free" choice, I would probably put in the "NEW" style, only because of what I read on paper... but there are so many other variables that you have to consider, like hitting the set up, tires, starting spot, etc... Is it worth it? I would say only if you were racing everyone else that hit their set up's "perfect" and you really needed that few extra horsepower. BUT, you can definitely win with the older style motorComment
