Valve spring changing

When you guys change your valve springs, do you use compressed air to keep the valves closed? Or do you just bring that piston to TDC and let the valves rest on the piston.

We have always tdc or close anyway. Had bad luck with an air compresser one time and dropped a valve on each side.

We use both at the same time

we place the piston at TDC only so we can release the air while changing seals and shims

but still use air to hold the valve in place------40 PSI of air is more than enough and will not blow the piston down if in fact you have it at TDC

I just don't like banging the valve off the head of the piston to crack the keepers loose.

we keep a length of soft nylon rope in the tool cart. take out the plug, fill up the cylinder with the rope, bring the piston up on compression SLOWLY. change the spring, lower the piston, pull out the rope.

I have seen that done before and liked it-----that might work well in the tech shed

Done this for a lot of years and have ALWAYS used the rope method. I bring it up close, feed the rope in until you can not force anymore and compress the valve..Done deal

This is also how we do it also. Heard one to many horror stories about losing compressed air.
