Wow, a man that did some testing and posted his results...I am proud for you and can confirm your results...You are also 100% correct on fan location and shrouding.

The efficiency of the radiator is directly proportional to the pressure differential across the fins from front to back. Meaning the airbox on the front of the rad is as important as the shroud on the back creating a pressure diff. Without that all you are doing is moving stagnant hot air accross the fins. There is 60-100* temp reduction with using a proper air box and shroud. In most cases you can eliminate the manual fan and go to an all electric option. It does require a couple other areas to be addressed but can be done on almost any race car dirt or pavement.

Did you ever take the fan off completely and see how much even the best fan drags the engine output down???

GM's good steel fan pulls almost 38HP at 7000rpms.

Water pumps are the same way they are very parasitic. You can easily make one pull on the chassis dyno without the WP belt on just to see...man do they suck power...

on the dyno we lost 4hp and 2lbs/ft going from an electric pump to a stage 3 stewart. very little loss.

Yes I tested no fan on the engine, It was no where near the power loss I had found others claim. I would have to double check my notes but it was either 7 or 11 hp to run my best fan set-up. I also run a stewart stage 3 pump.

Is it possible to run an electric fan. i.e flexalite setup etc. Ive always wondered. They have fans that can move the cfm and i imagine its free up some power

Results will differ from test to test but I can tell you that running any kind of fan at 7000rpms will take way more than you think. Howard Stewart built a water pump dyno that I used to run plenty of stuff on and it was a large electric motor hooked to a fan belt and the amp draw was used to back calculate the HP it took to run whatever was at the other end of the belt. Pretty simple.

I can tell you we started with a 25HP electric motor and it was not enough, so we went to a 50HP and that made more things measurable.

I guess that is why Cup teams have spent millions of research dollars on how to run their engines in qualifying without running the water pump. or only running it part of the time. That is why the engines are spewing water after the first lap. If you have a 6 gallon water system and spew it out you have lost 40+ LBS in qualifying.

Nowadays they have to be able to do it without killing the engine or they have to start in the back which does not make much that much difference at Super Speedways and a couple guys have won from the back at some of the other tracks.

Most folks have been unsuccessful on dirt with electric fans because they don't understand that it takes electricity to run them. Batteries are in a constant state of discharge and can result in pretty big HP losses after as little as 25 laps. An alternator is a pre-requisite to getting the system going as well as a pressurized nose box.

What you are balancing out is the net gain in the amount of HP it takes to run an Alternator-vs- running a steel fan. Usually results are in the +15-25HP. All you have to do is look at every pavement car you see out there...if bladed fans were the way to go they would all have them.

Is an electric water pump the way to go. I guess you also have to use an electric fan also. So would a 16v battery work or would you have to have an alt.
