Many water pumps today have a cam stop provision------not only is this not necessary for a 604 crate engine it will break the plastic timing cover
604 crate engines have a cam stop plate behind the timing gear to prevent walk so a external cam stop is completely useless
simply remove the stop from the pump before installation and all will be fine
I just wanted to point this out as we almost made the mistake yesterday while finishing an engine for shipment and was bolting on a water pump supplied by the customer that had come off of an open engine where the cam stop was utilized-----------we were seconds away from cracking the timing cover and costing us plenty of extra time
most pumps will need some clearencing on the right side cover bolt---below is copied from our website under FAQ and new engine checklist-----we will be adding a warning about cam stops to try and prevent that costly mistake
■Grind the RF middle (long) timing cover bolt (604)
This is the long bolt on the fuel pump side and it will interfere with many water pump set ups—-remove the bolt and grind ½ of the head –reinstall
(be sure to remove the bolt before grinding as the heat will melt the rubber seal and/or the plastic timing cover)----in some situations you may have to get the bolt rather thin and still possibly grind on the pump as well
water pump spacers will help with this issue but correct pulley set-ups will have to be maintained
