anybody chassis dyno the trans back to back are they all about the same? is there a better fluid for hp loss? i see low drag rears and micronited rear gears but nothing on the trans? just curious

I can't believe we continue to have this discussion.
Running a ball spline transmission with anything other than a carbon fiber drive shaft is crazy.
If the drive shaft ever brakes, you're in REAL trouble. You'll have a circular saw with a blade the radius of the remaining shaft sitting right next to you running at the RPM of the engine. The tub is NOT going to stop it, the seat is NOT going to stop it, and you'll end up losing a limb and/or bleeding out. Just ask some of the guys on here who have seen the results and/or experienced it first hand.
Your only saving grace with a NON ball spline is that the drive shaft yoke usually flied out when the drive shaft breaks. With a ball spline that doesn't happen.
Bottom line is if you can't afford the CF drive shaft, you can't afford the ball spline. This is one of those things that I simply cannot believe is not a rule with more tracks and sanctioning bodies.

Bingo! I have seen WAY TO many people damaged for life by an aluminum shaft on a ball spline. A friend of mine Buzzie Reuttiman (David's Father) was almost killed running an alumnium shaft with one at Eastbay when they would not allow CF shafts. Almost every year in teh trade magazines there is an article about someone being injured by one and tracks still will not make it a rule. I think it is a joke that someone will spend $3000+ on shocks, 10,000 on the latest and greatest chassis and $5,000 on parts that are just a few ounces lighter than the others but they will get into a car in a single layer fire suit without gloves and wear regualar shoes or run a ballspline with an aluminum or steel drive shaft.Originally posted by Matt49 View PostI can't believe we continue to have this discussion.

Egoracing;in most cases you are correct,but I know of several racers that run a ballspline,with a alu.,and or steel drive shaft,and have had no issues.They tell me the secret is MAINTANCE on the drive line.I will say this about that,(If you run a alu. or steel drive shaft,with a ballspline,and it comes apart,(LOOK OUT,)it could become Fatal!Originally posted by Egoracing View PostBingo! I've been looking and searching for months for an exploded view of a Gen2 Bert since I haven't been able to get my hands on one yet.
I finally found an exploded view in a catalog yesterday and my oh my...there is not much to it.
Improved design is all I have to say and much more efficient in high gear because the low/reverse "circuit" is complete disengaged best I can tell.

I'm sure there are literally hundreds of racers who have had no issues with a ballspline tranny and an aluminum shaft. That is not the point. Of course they haven't had an issue with it, they look after it and it hasn't broken (yet) due to an accident or just plain parts failure (it happens). The point is that when it does break, because things do happen no matter how good your maintenance program is, it could very well kill you, and if it doesn't kill you about the best possible outcome you are going to have is a broken arm, and once again, thats best case scenario.
I'm with everyone else on this one.... this is one thing that absolutely blows my mind that people continue to say its no big deal.... these are always the guys who have been lucky enough to not have one fail yet... Once someone has seen the result of one of these failures will quickly change their mind.
You could run a lifetime with one and never have an issue. You could load a revolver with only 1 round and spin it and shoot the rest of your life too.... but why when the consequences are so great?Last edited by hms_11; 11-29-2012, 01:19 PM.

Buzzie Reutiman goes over his cars like almost no one else I know. The shaft that failed on his car was new within a few months and never in an accident. We had an aluminum shaft fail because a clump of mud had a rock in it and it stuck to the lift arm and the rock cut the shaft in 1/2. Other one I saw was the locator arm for the lift arm broke and the bolt for the 5th coil cut the shaft in 1/2 and that was on a fully brand new car. Accidents do happen and running anything other than CF with a ball spline is almost as smart as playing Russian roulette.
