Installation Tip for new bee-hive-604 spring "kit"

when installing the new bee-hive spring kit onto a 604 engine the burrs that are on the valves surroundng the keeper groove must be removed.

this is most apparent on the intake valve but the exhaust valve should also be inspected

if the burrs are not removed the new machined style keeper will not seat properly and may fail

although this was always recommended it was not nearly as critical with the old stamped steel version as they were a much looser fit

do your best to not contaminate the oil, head, or valve guide with the material that is removed from the deburing process---use a paper towel to catch fileings

since the valve seal must be removed to replace the locating shim it is recommended to leave the seal on while deburing the keeper groove area of the valve this will act as final shield for debris.

YOU CAN FILE TOO MUCH------if you are not familar with this process, get someone else to do it.

    Time Frame---------------------------------

this is not something you want to start on friday afternoon when you plan on racing Friday night

I have not done one yet that went quicker than 4 hours----i might be old and slow but I am also familiar with the work-----allot yourself a solid 4 hours and don't rush it might cost ya an engine

Is this for the new style motors as well or just the conversion kit? My uncle sponsors me and just bought a brand new 604 last week. It's been broken in on the Dyno and we'll be putting it in soon.

If you purchased the new version of the 604 it will already have the Bee-hive springs installed

the engine can be identified by the logo on the end of the head----new version has a chevrolet bow-tie one the end

however, someone should have removed the valve covers and adjusted the valves before running the engine and you would notice the "Blue" spring at that time

Min. installed height per GM 1.780 however the new GM manual still only permits a maximum of .020 additional shim

NeSmith, FASTRAK and various other crate sanctions have adopted a policy of allowing any amount of shim needed to obtain the minimum height------(check your rules)

we torque rod bolts to 45 ft lbs with 30 wt oil
