604 Oil Cooler

i'm looking at upgrading the oil cooler for my dirt late 604. and by upgrade, i mean, it's never had one.

i searched through some older threads and really haven't found any specific recommendations. Here are my questions:

- what line size?
- what adapter for standard oil filter location?
- what adapter for remote oil filter location?

I'm inclined to get a purpose built cooler as opposed to the B&M/Setrab style.

I know the 604 oil pan has a provision for a standard oil temp gauge probe. Has anyone had any luck getting oil temp readings using this location or is everyone but me running an oil cooler?

Surely someone has standardized a kit for this application....

dash 12 is the recommended line size------ may seem big but it lowers the drag coefficient in hose and fittings

for standard filter location we use the Canton adapter 22-541 it is the least restrictive block adapter we have found but we still go in and radius all the ports-------this adapter filters the oil before going to the cooler which is what GM and most pump manufacturers recommend

for remote filter location we use all CV products CV780 is the block adapter for input and output lines
CV746 is the most common remote filter brackets (uses standard chevy filter)
or upgrade to CV749 that uses the less restrictive cummins style filter

the above also requires port style fittings that must be purchased separately
The CV set up is high end components with high end prices-------Moroso makes some products that will work just fine at a much lighter price tag but most customers here do request the CV stuff

we use the Allstar oil cooler #30145 it is a very well built cooler with -12 male bungs for easy plumbing and a 1/2" pipe bung for temperature

a few things to keep in mind----------
NEVER buy a used cooler
NEVER use a cooler that you do not know the history of
coolers CANNOT be cleaned
a quality cooler is between $200 and $400 ---engines are $6000 and up

mounting of the cooler should not be directly against the deck-----should be about 6 inches below the deck

use all full flow (AN) fittings in plumbing (NO brass or steel)

we have not had any complaints on reading oil temp from the pan

when using an oil cooler the ONLY way to check proper oil level is with the engine running.

I took it that many guys with 604's don't use an oil cooler. True/false?

I don't run one. Only 2 people I run with have em out of 20 cars

approximately half of our customers run oil coolers-------2 years ago that average was much higher but in an attempt to lighten race cars total weight I have had numerous guys dropping the cooler----we do highly recommend the CV products adapter that runs the 51268R wix filter when eliminating the cooler

I will never talk a customer out of running a cooler BUT we would rather not have a cooler than to have a cooler "done wrong"----and by that I mean correct line size, correct lines and fittings also quality cooler itself and adapters.
