    valve spring installed height

in recent weeks it has been common to see valve spring installed height checked in a post race inspections

Minimum allowable installed height per GM manual is 1.780" on a 604 and 1.700" on a 602

most series (not all) allow any amount of shim providing the spec is maintained
some permit only a .020" shim however still must maintain spec
some do not permit shims at all

know the rules before servicing this area

if you are shiming valve springs be very sure of your equipment for checking and the procedure that you use and it never hurts to leave a little to the safe side

at Race-1 we leave the installed height .005 to .010 to the loose side and talking with numerous other crate builders that is the most common procedure
